RIP Rutger Hauer

Published:

The iconic scene from one of my favorite movies of all-time. A fitting epithet and soliloquy for Rutger Hauer (1944–2019) :

"All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

When all your favorite actors are dying, you know you are getting old too.

Well, jack, while Blade Runner is a fav. movie, I had to go look to see what other movies he had been in that I had seen. IOW, I wouldn't say he was a favorite actor of mine.   I have seen a few other movies he'd been in, but none of them had the impact on me- not even close - as did Blade Runner.

I started feeling old when Joe Montana retired - not that I'm a Niner's fan, just that we're the same age and I think a lot of American men always unreasonably think they too could have played some professional sport. When Montana left the game, any silly thought I had that I could have played went with him.

Know what makes me feel old now? When ladies hold the door open for ME. <sigh>

Nighthawks was one of the few movies I had seen w/ him in it, Ed. He was in another movie called Ladyhawke.

I don't have a LOT of favorite movies, Todd, but Blade Runner is always at or near the top in that short list. I just think his acting in this scene is brilliant - his character can feel his life force running out and is fighting it with all his might. He also struggles with letting Deckard/Harrison fall to his death; on one hand he had been trying to kill him and had killed many of his replicant friends, yet realized near the end that life was precious and decided to let him live.   Hauer also changed the dialogue in the original script and the director and just about every fan of the movie would agree it was for the better.

I always enjoyed the debate as to if Deckard was a replicant or not. It was only after watching the movie for the third time that I started thinking he was. I haven't seen the remake; after being disgusted with the remake of Rollerball, then The Time Machine, I decided I'd try to steer clear of remakes of my favorite flicks from then on. (but I screwed up and watched the last The Day the Earth Stood Still <grin>) I DO wish they'd redo Starship Troopers, though.

I got a little annoyed at him a few yrs. back when I found out he was on the board of advisers for the eco-terrorist group The Sea Shepherds. (I agree with their aims, just not their tactics)

Sully, I was a little late with this tribute. I scan the headlines every day but did not see that he had passed on the 19th until yesterday.
