Online petitions are part of "slacktivism", just like hash tags and other meaningless but lazy gestures to make.

I'm all for doing away with it/DST but just like anonymity in the lottery, people need to contract their Congressional representatives with a phone call, followed up with a hand written letter and then with email(s), as well as encourage their like-minded friends to do the same.

But, that would require some actual time & effort and they'd rather sign some trivial online petition or whine about it on message boards, just as they do w/ anonymity.

It's just like everything else, if you want it bad enough, you'll put forth the effort to have it eliminated.
