People Are Funny Critters

A poem by Walt Garrison, one of my all-time favorite Dallas Cowboys.

Garrison was born in Denton, TX and worked as a cowboy on a ranch in the summers, then went on to play for the Oklahoma State Cowboys until he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent time on the professional rodeo circuit in the off-seasons and after he retired from football.

His signing bonus with the Cowboys in 1966 included a horse trailer.  Yup, that's a "real" cowboy, I'd say.

Former Dallas QB and MNF announcer "Dandy" Don Meredith once said of Garrison: "If it was third down, and you needed four yards, if you'd get the ball to Walt Garrison, he'd get ya five. And if it was third down and ya needed twenty yards, if you'd get the ball to Walt Garrison, by golly, he'd get you five."

Whoa, I bet he could continue on past that 1:11 (my favorite numbers) clock. Very good job.
Oh the broadcasting and football days of Dandy Don, Frank Gifford, Howard Cosell lol, never to forget Broadway Joe too.

Meredith was vastly underappreciated by Dallas, both by Landry and esp. the fans. The Dallas crowd has always been quiet, at least more so than most NFL teams and that's very unusual, esp. since the Cowboys have had something like a 99% rate of sold out home games (and nearly that on away games, even if the team usually doesn't) I'll never forget those crowds booing him, was very sad and he never forgot it. I don't think he attended any former player get-togethers and while he was born and raised in Texas, played all his football here, he retired to New Mexico.

I disliked Cosell, but I think most people did. I believe that's what kept people watching though. They've had quite a few men in the booth, but one of my least favorites was Dennis Miller - even though I liked him as a guest on talk shows and his stand up routine, I didn't like that I needed to keep a dictionary close at hand when he'd spew out some five/six syllable word.

I also liked Alex Karras in the booth; he was one of my favorite players when I was a kid when he played for the Lions.

I was going to boycott the games just like many others said they would when the kneeling commenced, then I realized it was only a few malcontents. Sheesh, owners have had murderers and other despicable men playing for them yet people were butthurt over some people kneeling for an overblown cause.

Garrison was quite the character and in fact, was on a recent list/video series of the Top 100 Most Memorable Characters in the NFL. I'd love to meet some of the past Cowboy greats, but if I had to pick just one, he'd be it, well over any of the more recent stars.

Those were the days before political correctness ran amok, Vergie.
