1944 during WW11 Battle of the Bulge, U.S. Brig. General Anthony C. McAuliffe rejected a German demand to surrender writing  "NUTS" in his official rebuff :-)to LILI Marlane Meantime Allied and Axis troops alike listen to the radio for the comforting "LILY MARLENE"

Tragic as to how many sweethearts , husbands, uncles, brothers, cousins, sons - all men lost their lives because of the evil fire.

Personally, had two older second cousins literally bumped into each other in Belgium during the conflict

1914 during WW! impromptu Christmas temporary peace traces, among war weary combatants on both sides, began to take hold along the Western Front trench warfare including exchanging food, playing soccer, etc between British and German soldiers - later these participating troops were replaced to restart the agonizing tragedy anew :-(
