Biden's pivoting Right: Why the president is moving to the right in 2024 on immigration

President Joe Biden boards Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2024. The President is traveling to Florida on a campaign trip.

WASHINGTON − Two years into his presidency, Donald Trump warned that he would "close the southern border entirely" if Democrats kept blocking funding for his proposed border wall.

It was the type of Trump rhetoric about the U.S.-Mexico border that Democrats regularly scorned as xenophobic.

But now, President Joe Biden is using similar language − seeking a border shutdown − as he urges Congress to pass a bipartisan bill under negotiation by senators to address what Biden has started to call "the border crisis."

Biden said the proposal would be the "toughest and fairest" set of border reforms in U.S. history and includes new presidential authority to "shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed."

“If that bill were the law today, I’d shut down the border right now and fix it quickly," Biden said Saturday to Democrats in Columbia, South Carolina.

Biden's push for a bipartisan border bill − one that also would include funding for Ukraine and Israel − marks a seismic shift to the right on border and immigration politics that has built over the past year.

Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Biden is trying to strip Republicans of one of their most effective wedge issues, setting up a potential case that House Republicans − who have refused to back a bipartisan border bill − stood in the way of long-discussed action on the border.

Yet the discussions are a far cry from a comprehensive immigration bill Biden sent to Congress on his first day of office that sought to "restore humanity and American values to our immigration system" by offering pathways for citizenship to undocumented immigrants in the U.S.

"The discourse has become which of the parties can be harsher on border enforcement," said Melissa Gilman, co-director of the Immigration Clinic at the University of Texas, Austin, School of Law.

Gilman said the political posturing ignores the reality that the border has never been the subject of policies more stringent regarding screenings for entry, expedited removal of migrants and other areas.

"I have to think it's mostly because the Republicans have succeeded in creating a lot of fear around migration issues and have had success in doing that," Gilman said.

Texas National Guard soldiers install additional razor wire lie along the Rio Grande on January 10, 2024 in Eagle Pass, Texas. Following a major surge of migrant border crossings late last year, miles of razor wire as well as huge quantities of refuse remain along the U.S.-Mexico border at Eagle Pass.

The 2024 election calculus for Biden, Trump

For years, Republicans have rallied their conservative base and tried to appeal to independent voters by accusing the left of being soft on border enforcement.

Republicans are historically viewed more favorably on border security. A USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll in October found more Americans, by a 50%-41% margin, trust Trump − the front-runner for the Republican nomination − to handle immigration over Biden.

Biden's tone has changed after record daily border crossings over the past year. The president has also heard from Democratic mayors who have raised concerns about needing additional resources to handle the influx of migrants in their cities.

"No, it's not," Biden said this month when a reporter asked him whether the border is secure. "I haven't believed that for the last 10 years, and I've said it for the last 10 years."

Republicans have taken cues from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, whose hard-line tactics at the border – including installing razor wire along the Rio Grande – appear to be influencing the tenor of the national immigration debate.

Meanwhile, House Republicans are ratcheting up the border feud further by moving to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, arguing he has refused to enforce the nation's immigration laws.

Although the text of bipartisan border legislation isn't finalized, senators have discussed giving the Department of Homeland Security power to shut the border down to migrants crossing illegally when daily crossings exceed a daily average of 4,000 over a one-week period.

And if migrant border encounters surpass an average of 5,00

* It's politics & it's an election year. President's do what works to their advantage & Joe is no different. The guy has nothing to lose by stealing from Trump's playback. Consider that 45 used that theme when he first ran, Joe tempered it & won. Now that it's a hot topic, Joe is hoping to bridge that gap even though it infuriates many.

* Remember when Trump walked across the lawn with members of his cabinet, carrying a Bible & holding it up in front of the church? That was for the Evangelicals in the party- in effect saying " no matter what they do, God is with me, so don't abandon me." Joe has also painted Republicans in a corner- they keep talking about Open borders, so there is a solution in the works & if they back off from it- 45 cannot claim that it's a problem & only he can fix it. Biden can simply tell the voters that the Republicans are impeding him. For someone over 80, he has stolen the Republican's thunder.

Biden doesn't need a bill or law to close the border.  He can just sign an executive order. He's telling the R's if you want the border closed you have to give me money for Ukraine. That will back fire on him big time. The public is tired of spending billions on Ukraine while he's ignoring the problems at home, particularly the border.

* The Dems have been " trying to work" with Republicans for months, after all, they have a slim majority. They need to implement things " with" those on the opposite side of the aisle. They more interested in Hunter than the border. Well the Dems have said for months" come up with a bill" and now that one is close to completion with Republican input- they backing off because 45 said so.
* Unbeknownst to you- Ukraine needs support, and a majority on the Hill want to aid democracy but the Maga wing is taking orders from the loser. They have absolutely nothing to show the American people,  except Hunter Biden investigation.
* What will backfire, is the assumption that Trump will win the election on " border talk" alone. The fool can't talk about inflation,  that's coming down, he can't talk about the economy- that's outstanding, better than his claims of his being the best in history. The " border" is his only talking point & he will lose on that as well.He has one trick up his sleeve & it's DOA, much like him thinking he will be back in the WH.
* The RNC wants to anoint him as the party's choice, yet he can't win 60-80% of Conservatives, his pushing 50 plus & that is showing him up to be a weak candidate. Half the Republicans in the country are looking for someone else. For someone who controls the party & getting 50 odd %- you roadkill.

* The more he goes on Truth Social & spews nonsense & confuses Nikki with Pelosi & keps talking about cognitive tests & repeating the alphabet, he loses voters. The only fools showing up at his small rallies & following his repeated lies are the uneducated Maga minions. That base is shrinking because folks are coming to their senses that he is damaged goods.
* He may control the party, but the voters are the ones that puts you over the top. He bragged about being instrumental in getting RoeVWade pulled out of the Supreme court and sent to the States- the idiot thinks women
have forgotten. They are passed with both him & the party. Now they attacking Taylor Swift- boy do these idiots know how to step in it. It's gonna be a bloodbath come November & then the circus will once again come to town with the " it was rigged" again folks.

Like I said, He doesn't need a bill or a law. Biden used an Exec Order to overturn what Trump did on his (Biden) first day in office to open the border, he can use an EO to close it down. When him or KJP says he needs a bill or law to close it they're BS ing you. They don't.
Trump doesn't need 60-80% of conservatives to win. If he gets that from conservatives and Indy's he's a shoe in. But the D's may still try something. I could say what I heard it might be, but you don't want to hear about it, so I'll keep it to myself.

* Not going to try & rehash information that clearly goes over your head. You read stuff from some right wing crap outlet & then pass it off as great information,  when clearly it's not.
* Hello, the Maga base is not growing, two: Independents left him in 2020 & there is no there there. You guys are under the illusion that even if he gets the nomination- he gets the Presidency. McCain got the nomination,  so did Dole & look where that got them? Your guy has " to much baggage " it's that simple.
* The guy has indicements, lawsuits coming out of his ears & in Maga world- they ALL false. Everyone is against him, he should be so lucky because he never steals or tells lies. He gets caught on tape & then attempts to explain it away as nothing serious. His grab them by the .. got him in trouble & he goes off on the witness stand with a mind-numbing explanation about women wanting it.
* Lastly- you really need to stop this " The Dems may try" nonsense remark. In 2020 Trump lost because he ran a shi*** campaign- he had no message on what he would do in a 2nd term. His doing it again, saying he wants to " Make America great again" Hello, you can't rehash old stuff and make it sound new.
* The voters " Tried something " in 2020, they rid themselves of your guy- were they Dems, sure & a lot of independents who couldn't stomach another 4 more years of him. They have turned the page on 45 & the only folks who refuse to see the light are you guys.
* Do you seriously believe that if charged in a single crime & found guilty that the voters will flock to him? His banking on folks like yourself to look past that & give him a 2nd chance. The President of the US commands " respect " & the only ones thinking he deserves it are the Maga folks & corrupt politicians on the hill.
* Trump doesn't get it, and neither do you guys- he was rejected at the polls by the voters, and in not accepting the results- blamed the Dems. Funny how he trusted the voters in 2016 but didn't in 2020. The old line " we only lose if they cheat" works well on weak minds, seems it still has residual effects 4 years later.

Yeah MD, it's like telling a kid a dozen times don't touch the burner when the stove is on. Eventually they learn the hard way.
