And download that extension for FireFox, you will like it very much.

I have FireFox version 2.0.0.6 and it works just fine with that extension.

It got rid of all the duplicate book marks that I had.

Select All, then copy and then paste on the fille after you have deleted whatever is on it first.
Before doing it, save the original prefs.js file to your desktop or to the document folder or rename it, just in case that you make a mistake and need to undo your mistake, if so just replace the bad file with the original one.
Even if you do the changes as Todd says, first backup or save the original prefs.js file to your desktop or to somewhere else.
