Saint Augustine of Hippo was African, with African family roots, and almost certainly had indigenous North African (Berber) ancestry through his mother. Augustinian monks are named after Saint Augustine of Hippo because they follow his Rule and spiritual tradition.He is the direct inspiration and namesake of the Augustinian Canons, Augustinian Hermits, and all branches of the Augustinian family
