Best Friends getting Vicks' Dogs

Published:

All the dogs that could be saved that were involved with the Vicks' case have been ordered to a handful of shelters which specialize in these types of cases, with Best Friends getting the largest number of dogs.

A small victory but a victory nonetheless, as most fighting dogs are put down without a second thought because of the special handling required.

Some might think that I would advocate Vicks' sentencing be harsh or some other inhumane sentence for his actions. He has already suffered career damage, financial damage and, I guess, some damage to his reputation (though I could not comment on that personally).   Michael V. didn't steal money, damage property or evade the tax man.  Michael V. facilitated and participated in the abuse, torture and death of living creatures that, under different circumstances, would have stood and defended him and his family until they died.  He did all this from a position of power and fame and privilege and would probably have continued had he not been caught.   He did all these under the guise of just going along with the neighborhood friends.... no big deal.

Personally, the only other true punishment I'd like to see happen to Michael V. is that he wake up one morning and understand the soul and heart of a dog.  If that were to truly happen, it would be punishment enough for him to have live with his prior deeds.  I think I may be asking too much, so I'll leave it to the judge, who is definitely supposed to know more about all this than I.

That's good news! Myself and many other animal lovers found it rather hypocritical to prosecute someone for killing dogs, then take that persons remaining dogs and kill them!!!!

TS - Good point and I had not thought of it in those terms before. Thank you.

But Pit Bulls are no longer adoptable once they were used in the Pit. What are they going to do with them?

Hey Tenaj - actually, there are now individuals who specialize in Pits only and there are safe havens in various areas in the US only for Pits and some specialize only in dogs that have been subjected to fighting.   When big cities started outlawing the breed (like in CO), wonderful dogs in loving homes were subject to seizure and from this also sprang up several rescues that deal only in the breed.    Best Friends is set up to shelter, rehab and provide lifetime care for the dogs. Typically, pit aggression is geared exclusively toward other dogs/animals and hopefully many of the MV dogs were not indoctrinated yet.    My understanding is that some of the dogs did not show evidence of fighting physically and that's always a good sign.    Still, given the danger involved and the uncertainty of behavior, I would imagine most of the dogs, at least at BF, will remain there and just get to be dogs in a loving, nonaggressive atmosphere. BF has areas for dogs that have every kind of behavior problem imaginable and they have experience with fighting dogs.   They have open areas in which to play and live and they have all the human contact they want. Most importantly, they live without threat from humans or other animals.   Knowing BF, they will probably find a way to use the dogs to help educate the public more and to help stop the relentless breeding and misuse of these animals. I do think MV should have to finance the retirement of his dogs into these shelters, if he has any money left. It seems only fair.

While I have only taken dogs that are typically considered not salvageable in society, I have refrained from taking Pits personally (although I've fostered). My love of GSD and Rotts and other large breeds would mean I would have to choose between just Pits or having other breeds (since I work on an individual basis). Many of my dogs over the years were deemed vicious and most would have been put down without intervention.    I'm also well aware of the danger a Pit can present under the worst of circumstances but breed-wise, they are not the biggest, fastest or naturally most aggressive but really do get the prize for tenacity - every breed can and will become vicious and will fight under the right (and most wrong, of course) circumstances.

I advocate only for the attempted rehab of any dog only by individuals or shelters that can provide absolute safe haven for the dogs and the people they might come into contact with.     My hope is that from this highlighted celebrity case of dogfighting that more rings can be shut down and the abuse will stop.   J
