Coin Toss, this isn't the way I understand it. From what I've been able to gather, there were illegals who worked for many years and paid into the system and are now legal U.S. citizens. They voted to compensate these workers. What bothers me is these people had not only entered the United States illegally, they destroyed lives by stealing soc sec numbers. Congress feels that granting soc sec to illegals who come forward and apply for legal citizenship will help prevent ID theft. This is the same stupid idea that giving an illegal a driver's license will prevent hit & run accidents and reduce the number of uninsured drivers.

I want to add that, although I agree we spend too much on illegals, I've been watching PBS and Bill Moyers Journal on Friday night, and our local reps are earmarking projects with our taxes, and many of them don't even exist! To quote Bill Moyers:

***Think of earmarks as individual pipelines of public funds allowing members of congress to designate money for whatever purpose they choose, without hearings or oversight. For a long time they could do it anonymously. A single member could add a few words to a bill - without attaching a name - and bingo! Hundreds of millions of dollars go barreling down the pipeline to a waiting recipient. No debate... no scrutiny. And remember all that money -- flowing through those personal pipelines to favored causes -- is public money... your money. ***

It does matter whether you're a Democrat or Republican>> The people of the U.S. need to know whats going on with it being an election year. The people of the U.S. also need to stand up and say enough is enough period...! voting on this measure were (11) Republicans and (37) Democrats. Each and everyone of these so called politicians need to get their act together.... Sending this to everyone I can.

Illegals getting money illegally, how ironic.

No stock tout ever got fired for recommending IBM. Unless a senator is in the news for raping and pillaging, they're hard to vote out.

Election year, potential tight race - this is a lead in to wave a magic wand, make these people citizens, and get them registered as communi..., ah, er Democrtats.

PS
What did you think comrade Moyer was going to say?

I never thought it would be that simple to become a citizen.   First, I hope these people would have to denounce citizenship & loyalty to another country. Then they would need to be living & working here for at least 5 years, pay all back taxes, etc. Then they have to learn English (speak, read, write)   That would be the only way I would agree that undocumented workers could become legal. I mean, you've got to admit that we can't possibly knock on doors and locate 10 or 20 million people (nobody knows for sure what the number is..after all, they're "undocumented!") and then send them back to Mexico or wherever they come from. It isn't feasible. Still, I have a better plan. I am going to move to Mexico and then sneak back into the United States illegally. After that I will get free medical care, food stamps and probably a better soc sec check than I'll be receiving anyway! :-)

MADDOG10 got it right, however the candidates skirt around the immigration issue because they need their votes. They carried a lot of power. No candidate is going to say that they will secure the borders, both above and underground (below ground), and stop all ships, boats, planes and other illegal ways to enter the country.

Don't issue drivers licenses, send them back home, no housing, no food stamps, no jobs, no welfare and what I would like to see is - if a child is born in this country from an illegal - that child is not legal and no illegal can VOTE.

Anybody could win this election if they do this. But they are afraid that the legals will vote against them because I tell you I've seen it happen year after year working the Latin America festivals - they turn out. That ain't no stereotype.

So the politicians are stuck between a rock and a hard place. That's why they all stutter when asked about the immigration issue. Walmart gave Bush campaign millions of dollars to keep the illegals coming.

Politicians and corruption?...what a concept.

Tenaj, I agree that it is sure death of a campaign if a candidate speaks out against immigration. I just finally watched the entire debate in Texas and Obama said he wants children of illegals to get a free education and go to college. At least that's what it sounded like to me.

One dollar spent on a war is one dollar too much, by any comparison, by any measure, by any logical reasoning, by any justification and by all moral standards.
