Family Moving Into New Home Finds Military Warhead
State troopers and military officials removed a rocket with a warhead Thursday from the yard of a home near North Pole, Alaska, after a family moved into the house, which had been vacant four years.
Troopers and personnel from Eielson Air Force Base arrived at a home in a subdivision near North Pole and discovered an "inert warhead" about 2.75 inches long, Alaska State Trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen told FOXNews.com Friday.
The area was evacuated voluntarily by officials and an explosive ordnance disposal team from the base recovered the weapon, which was inert but still attached to a propulsion device, the Fairbanks News-Miner reported.
A spokesman from Eielson told FOXNews.com that a Department of Defense unit recovered a military-grade weapon at the residence. He couldn't say if the rocket belonged to the base or how it got there. The rocket and warhead are now at the base's munitions squadron.
A neighbor, Rachelle Garver, told the News-Miner that the home had been vacant for four years, though a family just moved in this week.
