pays to go in a public toilet

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - It pays to use a toilet in southern India, as residents are earning close to a dollar a month by using public urinals, a scheme launched by authorities to promote hygiene and research in rural areas.

Dozens of people are queuing up to use toilets in Musiri, a remote town in Tamil Nadu state, where authorities have succeeded in keeping street corners clean with the new scheme, The Times of India newspaper said on Sunday.

"In fact, many of us started using toilets for urination only after the ecosan (ecological sanitation) toilets were constructed in the area," said S. Rajasekaran, a truck cleaner.

The urine was also being collected and tested for its efficacy as a crop fertilizer, an official of the state's agricultural university added.

People relieving themselves in the open is a common sight in India's rural towns and villages, as basic sanitation still eludes millions.

I didn't realize that people pee in public (unless they've had too much beer! lol) until many years ago when a friend who traveled to Asia told me it's quite common. I know urine has been tested in Europe as a cheap way of fertilizing crops, but Y-U-C-K   !!!!! Of course, what's manure? :-)

Actually, you'd have to pay me at least $5 bucks to use most of the public toilets I've been in.

In China where I live I see kids pissing all the time boys and girls and there's no shame. They just whip out their little thingy and off they go. Just like spitting and not covering their mouth when coughing, it's part of their culture. YUCK! is right.

I didn't know you could pee in a new deli. I just went to one and ordered a corned beef sandwich on rye. :-)

Many areas don't have indoor plumbing. Maybe it's more common than we think. I've seen families pull into the Publix parking lot and the kids get out of the car & pee. I was brought up in one of those homes where my mother always told me to wear clean underwear in case I got hit by a bus! Kids are cute, but I couldn't believe what I was watching. It's not good upbringing IMO. (BTW, the "yuck" was referring to using it as fertilizer, but as I already wrote, we use cow poop now!)

Speaking of India, LP had a very nice member who would post from India. I haven't seen her comments in a long time. Her name began with an S, but I'm drawing a blank. She sounded very sweet.
