A man had twelve toothpicks in front of him. He took one away. Now he had nine in front of him. How is this possible?

Unfortunately, as intriguing and entertaining as your riddles are, in this day of technology, anyone can just type key words in their search engine and find the answers.

Still fun anyway.

I know, but how can we be sure people are using their brain and not cheating?
