They changed the law that came back and bit them.

They changed the law in Mass in 2004 to have a special election for a senators seat when they resign or pass away. In 2004 they had a republican governor. They obviously did not want the governor to appoint a republican to replace Kerry. Now we have senator Kennedys death. Now they are biting the bullet about having a special election. They are looking for a way around the law now. Lets see how this unfolds as time moves on. The Dems cooked themselves on that one.
Laws are made to be followed not changed to suit the agenda. About having a special election for a senators replacement. I think it is the greatest idea they passed. Every state should have special elections to replace a politician wether it is a house or a senate seat.
