Warning to Paypal users

I just recently ordered something through them a few days ago, and noticed today that 4 charges have been made on my check card account totaling about $1100.00.

The lady at Bank of America said they will pay me back the money. Bank of America has a policy of insuring their customers, thank God.

She also said that the probable cause was because of a purchase I made through paypal and that there are ways for people to have access to my info. So much for paypal security. However I did recently remove a dangerous virus from my computer called "Surfsidekick", having to call Microsoft to remove it, because non of my antivirus could do it, and that might have been the cause, because of being able to get into your credit card info. But I think it was through paypal, because Surfsidekick mostly just invades the computer for advertising. Bank of America said that they've had other customers who've complained about the same thing, right after using paypal. So I'm pretty sure it was through paypal.

I can't put a stop on the transactions until they are processed on Tuesday. But my card has been blocked, and I'm receiving a new one in a few days.

Well so much for online purchases. NO MORE. Atleast through Paypal.

Among the things you were having problems with on your computer awhile back you may have picked up a keylogger which transmitted whatever you typed to a remote location where they got your numbers and passwords to access your private financial information.

Atlanta's consumer advocate Clark Howard has some suggestions you may want to browse when something like that happens and how to circumvent future problems such as the possibility of filing a fraud alert with the credit bureaus, also making a police report about the theft. ClarkHoward.com is his site. Good luck.

BTW I've installed both Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster both free software to prevent the installation of tracking junk. Ran a free scan here and they didn't find anything so they must be doing their jobs.

I agree with Konane. It is almost certainly a keypress logger, or else you got tricked by a phishing scheme. Did you ever click on a PayPal link in an e-mail? Like one of those links that claims that your account access has been limited? If you did, then you just gave away your login and password when you clicked the link and tried to login.

PayPal is a great payment system, IMHO, but like anything you need to be very careful when dealing with e-mails.

No, it wasn't through my email. I ordered a lottery system and the order was transacted through paypal. I know it was paypal because I called an 800 number to find out how to use a new card in place of the old one. I think the person on the phone tracked my goings and sold my number to someone. At no time did I give him any personal info over the phone or any other way. He only walked me through to what section the change over would be.

Thanx for the comments and tips from all who responded. I will take heed.

It's good that you use Bank of America Pac. They are the big dogs in my city. (Charlotte NC) I worked for them many many years ago for about 5 years when they were NCNB. There is a scheme were restaurant waiters scan your card into some type of computer and sell the information and your account is wiped out before you get home.

Many hackers are young digit head teenage nerds. I'm glad a law is finally in place to prosecute them.
