Mega Millions

The jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions lottery game has grown to $162 million for Friday's drawing.

None of the tickets sold for Tuesday's $138 million drawing matched all five lotto numbers and the Mega Ball.

There were eight second-prize winners from Tuesday night's drawing: 3 from California, 1 from Georgia, 1 from Michigan, 2 from New York, and 1 from Virginia.  Each ticket matched all five lotto numbers but not the Mega Ball number to win $250,000.

The California second prize winners will receive $111,078 each, because California does not use fixed prize amounts like the other Mega Millions states.

Also, 42 players matched four of the five lotto numbers, plus the Mega Ball number. Those tickets are each worth $10,000.  Nine of those tickets are from California, and are each worth $10,098.

The winning numbers were 9, 25, 48, 51 and 56. The Mega Ball number was 7.

The Texas Megapler was 3.

Wouldn't it be frustrating to be in California and hit the second place, knowing those in a different state collected more than twice as much?  I'd still be happy to get $111,078, though.  Let's see: I could buy a new car and let the remainder generate an extra couple hundred dollars retirement income per month.  Yeah, that would be all right.

By the same token, some people in California have won second prize and got more than a million bucks.

SassyOhio,

Did you check out www.megaplier.com?  I think that will explain all for you.

Only Texas has the megaplier. All of the prizes except for the jackpot are handled by the individual states. California pays everything on a parimutuel basis, so what the winners get depends on how much money is in California's prize pool and how many people win. If the money in the prize pool for second place is 350 grand and 7 people happen to hit it then they'd each get 50 grand. If there isn't a second place winner for a few draws and then one ticket wins second place that person gets it all to themselves.  While unlikley, it's possible that California could pay more to a second place winner than the jackpot pays to a single winner of the same draw.

Congratulations to the 2nd prize winners who played outside of CA. I hope it keeps rolling into new records. MM also has the bigger cash value at this point than PB.

I was asked by someone who knows I've done it before if I was driving over to Indiana to get in on the PB ~$200M drawing this weekend who looked surprised when I told him our local MM drawing was worth more.  I will never understand how anyone can get more excited about an out of state PB jackpot of $195M(cash $92M) than a local MM jackpot of $162M(cash $93M).  I guess some people like to play the game with the biggest jackpot numbers or they just prefer to have someone else pick up tickets for them.  I've done it but I prefer people pick up their own tickets, that way if I ever win big there will no dispute when I claim my prize alone.

I'm sure that some people simply prefer one game or the other and some think they have a better chance by playing both games, but I'm guessing that a lot of people who know the cash value is less than the advertised amount don't realize that the cash values are so different for the two games. Especially if you only play once in a while or don't pay attention to the details 195 sounds a lot bigger than 164.

Or maybe it depends on the headlines they read.  I know of a website that announced that on the last rolls PB soared to 195 million, but poor little MM only climbed to 174 million. OTOH, for the previous roll PB  was merely raised to 174 million while mighty MM leapt to 138 million. In all seriousness, I do think PB gets more publicity than MM, and for a lot of people it's the news stories that let them know "how big" the jackpot is. As near as I can remember every story I've seen about how much $365 million (or whatever the current advertised amount happens to be) is lists a bunch of things you could buy if you actually had that much  to spend, with maybe a brief mention of the cash value or taxes.  The headline and most of the  story is always about the advertised amount.
