N.C. Lottery sales follow expected decline pattern

North Carolina Lottery

North Carolina lottery fever is fading, new numbers show.

The introduction last week of two new scratch-off games did not keep the state lottery from seeing sales decline from the previous week.

Average daily sales of scratch-off tickets have dropped every week since the games began March 30. A breakdown of the sales:

  • $5.6 million per day in week 1, when tickets were sold on only three days.
  • $4.1 million per day in week 2.
  • $3.2 million per day in week 3.
  • $2.7 million per day in week 4, which includes sales through late Saturday.

The lottery plans to roll out two more scratch-off games next week and will continue to offer new games every couple of weeks. After Powerball starts May 30, the state plans to have a game where players pick 5 numbers and hope they match ones drawn from about 40 numbers. A pick 3 game is scheduled to launch next spring.

The additions are designed to keep interest — and sales — up.

To meet its goals for helping education programs in the state, the lottery must average about $3.3 million per day in sales in the first year. (It's at about $3.6 million per day now, thanks to the first few days of the games.)

Lottery officials have said they are pleased with how sales are going, especially with only four games on shelves for most of the first weeks. The declines were expected, and the lottery is still on pace to sell $100 million in tickets for the first month.

Lottery Director Tom Shaheen said that would be "tremendous."

Lottery watchers say the decline was expected after the novelty wore off, though it's worth watching.

"I think this has been a rapid descent, more than what I thought," said John Rustin, a lobbyist for the N.C. Family Policy Council and someone who has closely followed the ins and outs of lotteries. "It's interesting because it's such a steady decline."

As said yeah the declines would be expected. People get bored and discouraged when your options are "limited" watching the numbers of the remaining  winning tickets decrease daily. I think that it will be good when they get out the new tickets and when they add there online games it will be GOOOOOOD  LOL  Good Luck tonight everyone WHOOT WHOOT!Banana

They need to start a pick 3 and pick 4 game ASAP. Then add Powerball and a decent state lotto type game. Scratch tickets only get so far.

A pick 3 game is scheduled to launch next spring.

SC will continue to get NC's pick 3 and some Poweball players with an attitude that I might as well put Powerball in while I'm playing Pick 3 in SC and get a few scratch offs (they pay higher) while I'm standing in line and save a stop.  Pick 3 being the draw to SC.

The last time I went to SC, there were signs posted that SC had higher payout for scratch offs.

Until NC give lottery players what they want, SC will still get a piece of the NC's pie.

You would think that they would offer games early to keep the die hards in the state.

Interesting that they use John Rustin for a quote from the NC Family Policy Counsel considering that the counsel was kicked off the lottery case in the court ruling.

Why is the lottery commision waiting so long to introduce pick-3 and pick-4...  If they want to sell tickets.  Give us players what we want.  The winning scratch off tickets are too few and far between to be playing regularly.  I myself play to win that's why I want pick-3 and pick-4...

Yes NodThat's the media for you.

When NC plays Powerball, look for their sales to go up again. I hope they add a few more games later.

can't they do anything right?

CASH Only

I knew that the novelty would wear off quickly given that NC has a lower payout % for the scratch games than the surrounding states.

NC's first online game will be PB.

can't they do anything right?

What?Yes, they have done a lot of things right.  Just to name a few.

1. Fought like good soldiers and got the lottery passed after 20 years of the bill dying in the senate or house and up  against strong oppositions from opposing groups.  Ever heard of the Bible Belt?

2. Victoriously defeated opposing groups in a major law suit and ran off the people who were throwing a monkey wrench in it.  You do know what a monkey wrench is don't you?

3. Hired a dedicated staff that worked extra hard and got the lottery started on time in the mist of strong opposition and granted mistakes were made, but the lottery was started on time and new games are being introduced.  You do know what it takes to get a lottery started don't you?

Do you need more information to clarify your blanket statement/question?  You do know what a blanket statement is don't you Lottomike.

Geez janet,

If I can recall I believe you made the same type of statements on a thread when they were having trouble  getting this thing passed. Or was it when they passed it and there was a lot of contrversy over how it was done?

Why is it then when someone else makes a statement there has to be sarcasism on your part ? I too would like to know why they're getting the Powerball up and running, before the pick3 and pick4.! Maybe you could answer that for me. Don't you think thats like putting the "cart" before the "horse" ?

SmashYes I did, and I was following the herd, getting my NC bashing on.  It was the thing to do then, just like some people are taking liberties with Mexican bashing now.  If you read the other threads after all was done and said everyone agreed that we were too hard on NC and to give them a break and cut out the NC bashing and that they they had done a good job in spite of all the mistakes and media attention.  My sarcasm was because Lottomike agreed.  I guess he forgot.  I can pull up the thread if you want to.

Yes I do think that it is putting the cart before the horse to bring Powerball before pick 3 and my opinion is it the same reason they didn't want the lottery in the first place.   Just think about what group of people whose "game of choice" is pick 3.  Everybody knows that when a lottery is put in place some people gamble when they should pay their rent.

But that doesn't mean that they have done everything wrong.

Not only will Powerball create more interest due to the large jackpots but, they will also have the ease of only having to establish the cards for the game to be set up.Consider that all the set-up has already been taken care of.No need for NC to do all the security, drawn machines, etc. that goes along with "on-line games."You get the benefit of riding the coattails of a well established game right away.

typo:should have read "draw machines"
