ATLANTA, Ga. — During a review of the Monday, June 7, Cash 4 evening drawing, Georgia Lottery officials determined that an equipment malfunction occurred with a ball machine. One of the balls ejected back into the chute from the mixing chamber before the winning number fell.

As a result, the Georgia Lottery will hold a bonus Cash 4 drawing on Monday, July 5, giving players an extra chance to win.

"We are very serious about the security and integrity of our games," said Georgia Lottery President and CEO Margaret DeFrancisco. "While we regret that the equipment malfunction occurred, it is reassuring to know that we have procedures in place to identify problems and prevent them from happening again. We believe that giving our players an extra opportunity to win is the fair thing to do."

All winning tickets from the June 7 Cash 4 evening drawing are valid for redemption.

The bonus drawing will be held immediately following the regularly scheduled Cash 4 evening drawing at 10:59 p.m., July 5. All tickets purchased for the July 5 Cash 4 evening drawing will be eligible for the regularly scheduled drawing and the bonus drawing.

The Georgia Lottery conducts approximately 2,000 live drawings each year. Many steps go into a successful Georgia Lottery drawing. The ball sets for each game are randomly selected and certified by outside auditors. Each draw machine and ball set used is placed through a series of pre-drawing tests to ensure the absolute randomness of the results. There also are a series of post-drawing tests, which are conducted as part of the certification process. The entire process takes approximately three hours for a drawing that takes less than 60 seconds.

The ability to detect problems with traditional ball drawings is a tangible advantage over computerized drawings, in which a player or auditor cannot see the actual mechanism that generates the winning numbers.  In the past, computerized drawing errors have occurred, and continued to re-occur over the course of several months, without detection.

She seems to be doing a good job for Georgians.  You all have New York to thank for that (she is the former director of the NY Lottery).

I've said that about Ms DeFrancisco ever since she took over the Georgia Lottery, She is down to earth and very diligent in her work. I have the utmost respect for this Lady.

I could'nt agree more about seeing the malfunction with the ball set up rather than not seeing it with the computorized drawings. The states that do have computorized drawing could care less about the people who play them, and thats evident. If the problem continues without being detected the individuals playing the lottery are just being used and wasting their money, and it's a shame the states don't care enough to see this or care about the players....!

Mr DelaCroix

Show me a lottery where the drawings depend on randomness, and i'll show you a lottery where no one wins.

Did you read that sentence Rebecca? People bet money on numbers that would never come up because the numbers weren't in the computer. They got cheated.

You can see when all the numbers are in the ball machine. You can't see squat in a computer.

That's why so many Tenneseans play out of state.

But then you really don't care as long as them scratchers are selling, do you?

What a waste of time though. An entire week to do the right thing. How many people from the June 7th drawing still have their Cash 4 tickets in hand? How many people here keep their tickets in hand "just in case there was a malfunction a week before"??????? Yeah, right. Politically correct, technically well thought out not announcing immediately knowing people discard old tickets. Should have been announced the very next day. JMHO.

You don't need the old tickets.  The article states that tickets purchased for JULY 5 will be eligible for the regular drawing and the bonus drawing.
