@Joker:  When you say, "I'm not an Atheist, I'm an Agnostic," you might as well call yourself atheist.  God won't see a distinction when the day comes.

There may be a god out there that sees the difference. Maybe the type of god that gives out a brain with doubt and free will. There is a chance.

Religion and lottery - amazing how many similarities.

Are you saying you don't like the lottery?  You're all over the map.

Don't worry, you don't need to defend Joker.  He will undoubtedly post another 10 paragraph reason why I'm wrong.

Have no idea how you inferred I do not like the lottery.

All over the map? No, just more open minded than most. I see as many possibilities as there are combinations in a 6/49 game.

I defend no one, including Joker.

Todd, you work in mysterious ways. You close the "praying for a lottery win" thread but add "fuel to the fire" in this thread. Go figure!

It says so in this book, so it must mean it's true.....DUH!

I think it's healthy for children to learn the truth about Santa Claus as soon as they can understand it.  I also think that learning how to calculate the Expected Value of a lottery ticket is a valuable skill.  However, most cultures have evolved some explanation for existence that many people adopt as their world view and rely on for comfort, and often use as a reason to continue living.  For this reason, I get uneasy in public forums such as this when I realize that if I'm successful in exposing inconsistencies or fallacies in a belief system, I could cause someone to lose some of their stability through doubt.  For this reason, I prefer to point people to books or articles when they appear to have an interest in exploring other explanations for the world they see around them.

There is a wealth of information for those interested at...

By the way, if you look around at this site, you will discover that there really is a difference between a deist and an atheist, and that not all humanists are atheists.
