A self-confessed atheist has become a believer after mocking God by sarcastically praying for his mother to win the lottery.
However, his joke prayer was amazingly answered as the next day his mother won $1 million on the New York Lottery Sweet Million game.
Sal Bentivegna, 28, who did not previously believe in God, had sarcastically asked his mother to "ask your God for a million dollars".
However, his mother Gloria Bentivegna, follows the Catholic faith, and staying true to her belief refused to ask God for such a thing.
Taking his joke further, Sal then prayed out aloud saying, "God, I don't know if you're real or not, but if you are there, please let my mother win a million dollars."
He added, "If Jesus wants me to believe in him, that's what he'll do".
The following day his mother bought a "Lotto Tree" of unscratched instant win tickets from her Church's charity auction. Sal was then left absolutely stunned when he found out his mother had won a million.
Realizing that the odds of his mother winning were so farfetched, Sal has now become a firm believer.
He testified, "I can't shrug off that Jesus had a hand in it."
"No pun intended, but it was a Godsend," he said.
Gloria Bentivegna, reflecting on what had happened, is thankful to God for her winnings, but even more thankful for her son's conversion. She said: "'God performed two miracles, a true miracle."
By winning New York's Sweet Million game, Gloria Bentivegna will now receive $50,000 every year for the next 20 years.

Yeah I waited for like an hour for this story to be told on TV (that is why I dislike watching news on TV...they give it to you as it suits them and not you). I was thinking it was an online game jackpot win. Yes, $50K per year for the next 20 years is nice dough (of course, after taxes she is not a millionaire), but this would have been more impressive had it actually been an online game in which she had picked numbers like 1, 2, 3, 54, 55, and 1 for MB/PB...a highly unlikely combination to win and she won it. Now of course, the numbers I choose are hypothetical, but if anyone wants to play them, go ahead as I don't have a patent on that combination (just joking!!!).
Nice story but I think in the end, the fact his mom won still hasn't made him a "hallelujah, jumpin' for Jesus, praise you Jesus" kind of guy. I mean, if God were to bless me to win either Mega Millions or Powerball, I would make it a point to step into a church every Sunday (or a given day of the week if I couldn't do so on a Sunday) just to worship HIM and give thanks. Until then, I will remain critical of how many pastors present the Bible seemingly for their own gain at the expense of the followers.

You must meet non-believers in different places than I do. I don't know any hateful ones personally. I know some that become impatient with the flawed logic that believers often rely on. And yes, there are some who will sometimes be less than generous when joking about certain beliefs they view as silly. Hateful? It's not my experience. This doesn't mean there are not hateful non-believers. I'm sure there are atheist serial killers and rapists. It just doesn't fit the profile of what I believe are the majority of non-believers.
By the way, there is no logical way that I know of to disprove the mother and son's claim that his prayer was the "cause" of her winning, no more than the failure of his prayer would have disproved the existence of god. Consequently, the son was probably not a true atheist, because, in and of itself, the event that occurred would not have been sufficient evidence to make believers out of any non-believers I know.

The beginning. Its just hard for people to understand/overstand. For religous folks and non believers alike. Trying to tame anothers ego may prove to be a difficult task, yet alone trying to tame ones own. If only you could use/go beyond your five basic senses(which you probably can)you would know the truth for yourself. Don't think id waste 'energy' trying to convince or convert a 'non believer' or 'athiest'. If 'GOD' aka 'highest/higher intelligence' aka 'divine consciousness' hasn't revealed itself to certain people, maybe they are just not ready, or maybe they are not meant to have such forces within or around them, it can be powerful on both ends. I don't know, but im pretty sure it probably has, they just wearn't paying attention, or ignored/deny it all together. Its a big universe. You are not forced to believe anything. Every 'religion' has truth and fallacies. It would be far too easy if it were all truth, or all false anyway. You must seek, with intention. 'Religion' was probably to be created for a kind of moral guidline, but of course it quickly became of political gain, and a lot of time is still used as such. But thats not to say that there isn't any truths within them. Im pretty sure that a lot of religious texts have been re-written plenty over the years by, who knows. But id like to think that 'GOD' aka 'divine will/source/energy' transcends religion, groups, time, space, etc. I also heard that 'GOD' is also a/The master scientist/mathmetician/architech. Whats crazy is that he says he was 'mocking', but anyone who truly doesn't have any faith, or belief in God or in a Higher Power wouldn't even bother making a prayer, 'mocking' or not. So either deep down he really wanted to believe, or their was already a small bit of faith within him that did believe. That mustard seed. I don't know.

This story is good because the mother refused to ask God to let her win the lottery as her son commanded. This proves her faith is unyielding--she knows it's God's power to do with what He wills and not hers to command God to use His power to her will. The son should remember this lesson when someone challenges him the same way he challenged his mother. I would say that God got the check mate on the son.

There are worse things to ruin impressionable young minds with. In this day and age something is needed
to make impressions on young minds especially when the world has become such a hostile, hateful, hurtful
place for so many of them.
Why not have a God to turn to? I believe in God and no one will make me believe any different, if they
did it would be satan himself. The father of lies and uncertainty. Satan is the one responsible for doubt
and rejection of God by humankind. We've read what you think about God...do you believe in satan?
God has been a source of strength, hope and faith for many people. He will continue to be too.
Why try to convince them there is no God? Why get so angry when one wants to believe there is a God?
I think your first post to this thread was something along the lines of Coincidence..and that's it. It is said
that: with God all things are possible...who knows why he chooses to answer some and ignore others.
Who knows why suffering is allowed to happen around the world? I sure do not but I'm not going to
question why He allows it or why He won't put a stop to it. I won't challenge God. There are enough
people in the world challenging him..if he took on all of the challenges presented, he would be no differ-
ent than man himself. His power, mystery and greatness would be greatly taken for granted and consi-
dered void because man feels the need to understand and control what is not understood and not able
to be controlled. Man needs to know all mysteries, understand all powers and take charge of what is
not thiers to control. Man diminshes and degrades things. God is very smart to ignore some prayers
and disregard most challenges. He allowed the atheist an answer...we will never know why, we can
guess but only God knows why and that's good enough for most of us, the rest of us can just go on
believing it's coincidence...even the coldest, smallest hearts and minds can change. This is where With
God, all things are possible fits in again.

Then after a few posts of varying degrees of levity in both directions, you weighed in with the above. I disagreed and replied to it, but you sidestepped my reply, eager to engage Joker and Mario.
Even after your tirades, the objects of your abuse tried to remain civil as long as they could. Visiondude's response to Joker's same post was thoughtful and peaceful. As a fellow believer, you could learn a lot from him.
I don't think there's any doubt about the source of the hatefulness in this thread. I personally know some Iranian immigrants; attitudes like yours cause a lot of hurt to a lot of people.
