Atheist converts after mock prayer to win $1M lottery is answered

New York Lottery

A self-confessed atheist has become a believer after mocking God by sarcastically praying for his mother to win the lottery.

However, his joke prayer was amazingly answered as the next day his mother won $1 million on the New York Lottery Sweet Million game.

Sal Bentivegna, 28, who did not previously believe in God, had sarcastically asked his mother to "ask your God for a million dollars".

However, his mother Gloria Bentivegna, follows the Catholic faith, and staying true to her belief refused to ask God for such a thing.

Taking his joke further, Sal then prayed out aloud saying, "God, I don't know if you're real or not, but if you are there, please let my mother win a million dollars."

He added, "If Jesus wants me to believe in him, that's what he'll do".

The following day his mother bought a "Lotto Tree" of unscratched instant win tickets from her Church's charity auction. Sal was then left absolutely stunned when he found out his mother had won a million.

Realizing that the odds of his mother winning were so farfetched, Sal has now become a firm believer.

He testified, "I can't shrug off that Jesus had a hand in it."

"No pun intended, but it was a Godsend," he said.

Gloria Bentivegna, reflecting on what had happened, is thankful to God for her winnings, but even more thankful for her son's conversion. She said: "'God performed two miracles, a true miracle."

By winning New York's Sweet Million game, Gloria Bentivegna will now receive $50,000 every year for the next 20 years.

Hmm... Well I thought the bible contained numerous verses that pertained to testing God, and that it pissed Him off... Hopefully this reborn christian will beg for forgiveness once he learns.

Or perhaps ever since this world has gone to crap, God decided that He needs to let His presence be known so this plane of debauchery that we call earth can finally adopt some sanity... it is getting awfully close to that 2012 phenomenon...

And I don't mean to force any religious views or beliefs onto any of y'all, for I am a self-proclaimed agnostic, or as my father would say: "half-assed christian." In a "glass is half empty" sort of way...

Its hard to say anything good about this story. I don't like when atheist temp God to bend to
their will by preforming stupid little parlor tricks. just to prove his existence. "if there is a God he'll knock
this glass of water right off the table" or the college professor who claimed that there was no God
and that if there was; he would come knock him off his podium. how much more arrogant can the human race become? He is the Supreme Being and has nothing to prove to you or me. now I can't answer why
this woman won the lottery; but I can say that a million bucks is nothing compared to spending eternity
knowing that your son is in eternal <snip>ation. maybe, he has become a believer I hope so. but he
better quit throwing his little temper tantrums like a 5 year old and start taking our heavenly Father
serious and start showing him a little respect!

I love stories like this........

Isaiah 61:7 "Instead of their shame my people will receive a double portion, and instead of disgrace they will rejoice in their inheritance; and so they will inherit a double portion in their land, and everlasting joy will be theirs." The mother got 2 blessings her son becoming a believer  and $1 million dollars.........

Thank you Jesus!!!!!!!!

Yeah I waited for like an hour for this story to be told on TV (that is why I dislike watching news on TV...they give it to you as it suits them and not you).  I was thinking it was an online game jackpot win. Yes, $50K per year for the next 20 years is nice dough (of course, after taxes she is not a millionaire), but this would have been more impressive had it actually been an online game in which she had picked numbers like 1, 2, 3, 54, 55, and 1 for MB/PB...a highly unlikely combination to win and she won it.  Now of course, the numbers I choose are hypothetical, but if anyone wants to play them, go ahead as I don't have a patent on that combination (just joking!!!).

Nice story but I think in the end, the fact his mom won still hasn't made him a "hallelujah, jumpin' for Jesus, praise you Jesus" kind of guy.  I mean, if God were to bless me to win either Mega Millions or Powerball, I would make it a point to step into a church every Sunday (or a given day of the week if I couldn't do so on a Sunday) just to worship HIM and give thanks.  Until then, I will remain critical of how many pastors present the Bible seemingly for their own gain at the expense of the followers.

You shouldn't "Mock" GOD.  Maybe the lord is trying to tell this guy something?   Prayer is a powerfull thing.....maybe the lord did let him win to give him a message......  Interesting Story!Blue Angel

Silly story.

If one prays to win a jackpot and it does not come true, that does not prove god does not exist.

But if it does come true, then god does exist?

Flawed logic!

i happen to believe it's 100% congruent with Gods nature that he could have accomplished this within that man's life in order to get his attention.   i have personally been a witness to these scenario's many times in my lifetime,  so i know He does.

i also see the value when He doesn't

but......the difference in a man's heart determines what God does at times,  and because God knows the heart of each man,  He knew that sal bentivegna would make good on his end of the challenge,  so God chose to do it.

the key to this isn't a $1,000,000

the key is that sal bentivegna made good on what sal's heart was saying all along.  long before sal spoke those words

that he WANTED to know God.   not that he wanted to excuse him away.

if the real condition of sal's heart was only to consistently excuse him away,  sal would have mirrored your response.

Wow, this guy is VERY arrogant to think "God" answered his mock lottery prayer for a million dollars while a child dies every few seconds from starvation and disease.  On a side note I wonder which religion he converted to?  He has thousands to choose from:) Whos knows which one is correct.  If he happened to choose Christianity I wonder which of the 38,000 denominations he chose LOL.

This entire thing is completley ridiculous and anyone who believes "God" answered his lottery prayer and gave his mother 1 million dollars to "get his attention" while so much suffering is happening to innocent children is in serious need of mental evaluation.

"The moral of this story is don't mock God as he is very powerful and will surely answer whatever you are mocking for."  I almost spit my drink up at this comment.  So, if I mock "God" my Mom gets a cool million?  Why wouldn't you mock "God"?

TruthSerum, you say there are 38,000 Christian denominations. Add to that the thousands of other religions and picking the correct one is like a Pick 4 game.

The last time I compared religion to a lottery, my post was deleted. I think it was god's will.

Thank GOD someone finally gets it here on the LP. I've been saying this forever.

20,000 kids die everyday from malnutrition and/or disease, but God answered this guy's prayer.....

There are too many gullible folks on this planet fighting and killing each other over who's God is right. And to this day, in the 21st century, folks still believe in this old stuff that is so outdated, it boggles my mind.

I just can't wait to see the next football team that huddles and prays to win the game. I'm sure God's priority for the team to win is much higher than saving those 8 million kids that croak at an early age every year.....

You're absolutely right. The folks who actually believe this are delusional and need serious mental evaluation. It's scary...

rdgrnr,

You must meet non-believers in different places than I do.  I don't know any hateful ones personally.  I know some that become impatient with the flawed logic that believers often rely on.  And yes, there are some who will sometimes be less than generous when joking about certain beliefs they view as silly.  Hateful?  It's not my experience.  This doesn't mean there are not hateful non-believers.  I'm sure there are atheist serial killers and rapists.  It just doesn't fit the profile of what I believe are the majority of non-believers.

By the way, there is no logical way that I know of to disprove the mother and son's claim that his prayer was the "cause" of her winning, no more than the failure of his prayer would have disproved the existence of god.  Consequently, the son was probably not a true atheist, because, in and of itself, the event that occurred would not have been sufficient evidence to make believers out of any non-believers I know.

Fact: 20,000 kids die everyday

Fact: Religions of all sorts, not just Christianity create wars that only produce mayhem, suffering, and death.

Fact: Anyone who believes that their religion is superior to the other tens of thousands of religions, sects, denominations, Deities, and so on, needs to be evaluated. Sorry If that sounds harsh, but I believe you wrote that unbelievers were gutless cowards.

Hey Ridge, you may think I'm picking on Christianity, but I'm not. Organized religion is the culprit. I don't care If they believe in the Pet rock as their God. The problem starts when the Pet rock religious group wants to kill his Human kind over it. Or less violently like telling kids they're going to burn in hell If they don't assimilate, and then mutilate their genitals. Isn't that child abuse?

Why not show them every religion so they can have enough time, like I did, to see the red flags and decide for themselves? That's not too much to ask is it?

Then If they did their homework, they may see that it's impossible for every religion to be correct, therefore....BING BING BING BING BING BING BING.....The bells start ringing....and a lightbulb goes off......hopefully....

Talk about hate....My MY.....Where's your compassion? Didn't Christ say to "turn the other cheek"?

You say that anytime anyone mentions God or religion, the few A-holes (Gutless cowards) (Losers) chime in.

It's funny to me when a someone here on the LP posts a system or any other idea, the folks come out of the woodwork and challenge the validity of the system. They want and demand PROOF......YES Proof....Hmmmmmmm.....

But if it deals with religion or God, then it's ok, no need for anything.....no proof, no common sense, no nothing. Afterall, It was written in a book thousands of years ago, and there are multitudes who've believed this for a very very long time, so it must be true.!!!!

Why does everything else in life demand validity, but religion always gets a free ride?....Why?...So maybe next time you may want to specifically address the issues I bring up, and stop with the blanket statement, that already tired statement about gutless cowards. I believe you're a coward for not addressing the issues I bring up, and gutlessly hiding behind your blanket statements.

Ah, the race card. I don't even know what race you are and you call me a racist.

You say you're a proud US citizen, then why don't you stop persecuting people for expressing their freedom of religion?

My ancestors came here to escape from people like you!

And now we're supposed to put up with it and let it start here?

It's not a race card, it's a fact. You lumped me in with the crazy Iranian strong armed husbands who are ubiquitous in Iran. That's not me. I've eaten plenty of apple pies and driven a few Chevys in my lfe. I play rock guitar (or at least I think i do), relishing in the American lifestyle. You've got me pegged wrong dude. Ridge, I don't hate you as a person. I don't hate anyone that doesn't agree with my thoughts. You keep saying persecuting...what?.....So because i disagree with a thread about a guy's mom winning a million by some force, makes me a persecutor?....Are you schmidting me?

Yeah, you're a regular Opie Taylor, I'm sure.

Ok, we gave you free speech which you never had before and the thing you want to do with it most is tell us how stupid we are to believe in Jesus Christ and God?

Tell me how long a Christian would last trying that crap in the place you came here from? He'd have his head lopped off on day one.

The best part of what you wrote above was about how long a Christian would last "WHERE I CAME FROM"....hee hee....You made my point about the religious nutcases all over the world.

I won't mention the persecution of the scientists hundreds of years ago who were forced by the Catholic church to denounce that the Earth was NOT the center of the universe, and that many many stars and planets were out there. They either got burned alive, or imprisoned until their will was not strong enough, so they recounted everything they wrote in order to live.

Yeah, you're right Ridge, RESPECT is the key.....

You wanna tell me what Christians did HUNDREDS of years ago?

YOUR people are making that look like a picnic EVERY FRIGGING DAY, RIGHT NOW!

Go to the website I gave you for irrefutable, documented evidence.

And again, after checking that out, tell me how important it is to mock and ridicule women in these forums for mentioning they prayed to somebody.

Do you not have the cojones to fight the real religious threat - your people?

These American Christian women aren't demanding you or anyone else join them in prayer or worship their God like your people do.

Why not go straighten out your people first?

Fight the real enemy.

Or are you a you-know-what?  (Gutless Coward)

The common thread of all religions is "LOVE". Let's harp on that instead of HATE....

He said they need to be wiped off the face of the earth.

You said they were my words.

I just told you whose words they were.

And that's the truth.

It was the President of the place you were born.

Well of course I agree. The Iranians are just as crazy to think Israel should be wiped off the map as any other religious group who thinks the same. Again, I'm not biased. Wrong is wrong and it comes in many shapes and sizes, religions, groups, countries, ideals, and so on.

joker17

Just because I was born in a country who's moral boundries are dictated by some religious fanatical idealism, does not automatically become written in stone to someone who was born there and left. Get with the program.

Here i am spending so much time telling you I'm against radical ideas that are debatable at best, and all you can do is label me without anyhting to back it up. Not to mention the fact that you've systematically avoided just about every point I brought up earlier in this thread.

"What is with this whole thing about men and their wives? "

I already told you in the 2nd sentence: "You wouldn't understand".

Our culture cherishes, loves, respects, defends and protects women.

Your culture beats and abuses women and treats them like slaves and property.

It's not your fault. That's what your people do. That's your culture.

I never said you couldn't disagree about anything. But why do you have to make the most peripheral mention of prayer or God in a post the focal point of the post and then use it for one of your attacks on Christianity?

People pray, people believe in what they want. They don't come here to hear you preach about how stupid they are for their religious beliefs.

Who appointed you the religious police? Do you want a stick to beat the women on the street like they do in your home country?

Get over it.

You know what it is and so does everybody else.

Your hatred for Christianity is palpable, visceral and seething.

majest

The beginning. Its just hard for people to understand/overstand. For religous folks and non believers alike. Trying to tame anothers ego may prove to be a difficult task, yet alone trying to tame ones own. If only you could use/go beyond your five basic senses(which you probably can)you would know the truth for yourself. Don't think id waste 'energy' trying to convince or convert a 'non believer' or 'athiest'. If 'GOD' aka 'highest/higher intelligence' aka 'divine consciousness' hasn't revealed itself to certain people, maybe they are just not ready, or maybe they are not meant to have such forces within or around them, it can be powerful on both ends. I don't know, but im pretty sure it probably has, they just wearn't paying attention, or ignored/deny it all together. Its a big universe. You are not forced to believe anything. Every 'religion' has truth and fallacies. It would be far too easy if it were all truth, or all false anyway. You must seek, with intention. 'Religion' was probably to be created for a kind of moral guidline, but of course it quickly became of political gain, and a lot of time is still used as such. But thats not to say that there isn't any truths within them. Im pretty sure that a lot of religious texts have been re-written plenty over the years by, who knows. But id like to think that 'GOD' aka 'divine will/source/energy' transcends religion, groups, time, space, etc. I also heard that 'GOD' is also a/The master scientist/mathmetician/architech. Thats kinda cool too also.

Whats crazy is that he says he was 'mocking', but anyone who truly doesn't have any faith, or belief in God or in a Higher Power wouldn't even bother making a prayer, 'mocking' or not. So either deep down he really wanted to believe, or their was already a small bit of faith within him that did believe. That mustard seed. I don't know.
But I don't see why its such a big deal that 'HE' believes that Divine Intervention played a part? they are the ones that won the prize/jackpot! Its his/their life. Why try to deny them that?

The only sad part about non-believers/athiest or whatever you want to title it, is that they don't allow themselves to see/experience the beauty or joy of a miracle. A lot of times they seem pessimistic in general, not just limited to these topics. They also deny to realize that 'Athiesm' is also 'religion' or a 'religion'.  **perspective**.   But with that being said, I don't like to devulge/divulge or opinionate too much about such matters or subject. Not really into debates. Plus I have lotteries to win :)    At the end of the day, most people want to be right for agenda or for ego sake, or to satisfy ones own ego if you will, even the so called experts and geniuses of the world. It probably takes more than just 'following' a religion, attending a church or reading texts also. But what do I know, this is not the gospel, its just an opinion. The End

This post has been automatically changed by the Lottery Post computer system to remove inappropriate content and/or spam.

This story is good because the mother refused to ask God to let her win the lottery as her son commanded.  This proves her faith is unyielding--she knows it's God's power to do with what He wills and not hers to command God to use His power to her will.  The son should remember this lesson when someone challenges him the same way he challenged his mother.  I would say that God got the check mate on the son.

Sorry little ayatollah, I ain't sticking my head in the sand so you can come to my country and push people around and tell them what they can or can't believe in.

Go abuse women in your own country.

And take a bath once in a while.

It's an old American tradition.

Learn it, live it, love it.

Sorry to break the news to you, but you already have your head up your ass you racist dumbass.

Both members have some valid points..when they are dissected from the name-calling and vitriol.

You can easily go back and see that Ridge started the name calling with his racist comments and calling Mario all kinds of names, even after Mario warned him about the rules.

100% coincidence.....PERIOD!

I Agree!      How many times have the faithful prayed to God for a big lotto win & it never happened? I know it's more than the fingers & toes i have. It was just her time to win. You cant convince me God had anything to do with it.

Ruining millions of kid's impressionable minds for the rest of their lives is just as bad. I'd rather have my head chopped off than be a brainwashed robot who spends the rest of their pathetic lives worring about some God sitting up there and whether he's gonna send them to hell or not.

Pathetic!

There are worse things to ruin impressionable young minds with. In this day and age something is needed

to make impressions on young minds especially when the world has become such a hostile, hateful, hurtful

place for so many of them.

Why not have a God to turn to? I believe in God and no one will make me believe any different, if they

did it would be satan himself. The father of lies and uncertainty. Satan is the one responsible for doubt

and rejection of God by humankind. We've read what you think about God...do you believe in satan?

God has been a source of strength, hope and faith for many people. He will continue to be too.

Why try to convince them there is no God? Why get so angry when one wants to believe there is a God?

I think your first post to this thread was something along the lines of Coincidence..and that's it. It is said

that: with God all things are possible...who knows why he chooses to answer some and ignore others.

Who knows why suffering is allowed to happen around the world? I sure do not but I'm not going to

question why He allows it or why He won't put a stop to it. I won't challenge God. There are enough

people in the world challenging him..if he took on all of the challenges presented, he would be no differ-

ent than man himself. His power, mystery and greatness would be greatly taken for granted and consi-

dered void because man feels the need to understand and control what is not understood and not able

to be controlled. Man needs to know all mysteries, understand all powers and take charge of what is

not thiers to control. Man diminshes and degrades things. God is very smart to ignore some prayers

and disregard most challenges. He allowed the atheist an answer...we will never know why, we can

guess but only God knows why and that's good enough for most of us, the rest of us can just go on

believing it's coincidence...even the coldest, smallest hearts and minds can change. This is where With

God, all things are possible fits in again.

Joker are you atheist or agnostic?

I've never seen more hate than the hate non-believers have for Christians.

Funny thing is, they're always gutless cowards.

Every last one of em.

I just reread this thread from the beginning.

Here is Joker17's first post in it:

https://www.lotterypost.com/news/232109/2076541

It was followed immediately by an equally inoffensive and short remark by Mario38.

Then after a few posts of varying degrees of levity in both directions, you weighed in with the above.  I disagreed and replied to it, but you sidestepped my reply, eager to engage Joker and Mario.

Even after your tirades, the objects of your abuse tried to remain civil as long as they could.  Visiondude's response to Joker's same post was thoughtful and peaceful.  As a fellow believer, you could learn a lot from him.

I don't think there's any doubt about the source of the hatefulness in this thread.  I personally know some Iranian immigrants;  attitudes like yours cause a lot of hurt to a lot of people.

Thanks jimmy. This forum needs more people like you. On second thought, this world needs more people like you.
