Powerball

By Todd Northrop

The multi-state Powerball lottery drawing took place last night without any jackpot winners, causing the new jackpot for Wednesday's drawing to grow to an estimated $173 million, with a cash option of $105 million.

Saturday night was the 11th consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner.

Even though there were no jackpot winners, 9 lucky tickets matched the first five numbers for a $200,000 second-place prize: 1 from Florida, 1 from Kentucky, 1 from New Hampshire, 2 from New York, 1 from North Carolina, 1 from Rhode Island, and 2 from Texas.

None of the second prize tickets was purchase with the Power Play option.

73 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Of those tickets, 11 also were purchased with the Power Play option, multiplying the prize by 4 for a total cash prize of $40,000.

The Powerball winning numbers for Saturday, October 22, were 3, 8, 23, 30, and 58, with Powerball number 13. The Power Play number was 4.

The last Powerball jackpot to reach or exceed the size of the upcoming Wednesday drawing was on August 10, 2011, when one ticket from Minnesota won a $228.9 million grand prize.

A total of 1,257,330 tickets across the USA won more than $10.6 million in prizes playing "America's Game" Saturday. 181,190 of those winning tickets were purchased with the Power Play option, which multiplied the prize by 4.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, any non-jackpot prize is multiplied from 2-5 times, depending on a computerized random number generated that evening. Second-place Power Play-enabled tickets matching five numbers but not the Powerball are always multiplied by 5 times, for a $1 million prize.

Powerball is now played in 41 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Powerball winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing takes place.

I observed that lots of second prize winners are on the east coast. I wonder whether its because they play more or they're just lucky like that.

I am spending exactly $5 on this jackpot. 2 tickets I'll choose the numbers with powerplay and 1 quic pick.

Good luck players.

Lottery Groups can be ok as long as they're composed of family or friends or in your workplace.

When you get in with people you don't know or connect via mail or online it can be risky.

And if you send money outside the country, especially to Canada, pfffftttt, kiss it goodbye.

Well said. I wouldn't ever get involved online,or outside of my immediate circle of friends, people. Thanks for the follow up.

maringoman, CA one of biggest lottery states in west, is 1 state that does not Play Powerball

so ofc it looks like East beats the west.

as for playing in a group,  rofl at people thinking their odds are better, their a trade off, the money goes poof.

i do enjoy such large jackpots, anytime its above 100 millino cash, am in dream land.

Slick Nick's avatarSlick Nick

Well having 2 tickets is better than one. Especially when you only pay a dollar and could win on another players ticket. I dont need 173 million to make me me happy, just 2 or 3 is just fine.Party

Uh.. no. Don't gotta do nothing. 1 ticket for 1 winner and they don't have to spread the wealth. The only one that gets a share is the govt, and they take too much. I already have my plans, and it includes close family and a charity foundation.

I never do groups. There's always some sore loser who didn't participate who thinks they are owed. Ya gotta pay to play and those that pay, get paid. But good luck to you and your group play, slick.

Good luck to everyone! May luck shine down on you! Thumbs Up

Well, California should ditch the feeble Super Lotto Plus and join the Powerball.

I wouldn't say don't get in a lottery group that you don't know.  I have run several lottery groups with people that everbody didn't know each other at first.  It has always been without problems.  I definitely wouldn't send money to anyone that I can't meet with in person.  The main thing with groups is to have everything in writing before $1 dollar is played.  That's the only way to do it.  May be starting another group if it rolls again.  Good Luck everyone!!

What's the value of having something in writing if you don't know who wrote it or who's all involved?

I dunno ridge, I've read plenty of stories about friends and family turning on each other once their group wins. The greed takes over in the end, and it's also harder to keep it a secret when it's a group win. Maybe I just have trust issues, but I prefer to go it alone.

When I say "HAVE EVERYTHING IN WRITING", that means everything.  I wasn't trying to list what all that included.  You meet, you have names and phone numbers, essentially you have by-laws, etc.  As I said before, I've done this several times without problems.  If I start another one, if you're in the Atlanta area, you're more than welcome to join.  Good Luck!

I Agree!

Money tempts most people.

Most family and friends stories remind me of the short fiction story by Mark Twain - The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg.

Good Luck!

Before I retired I played in a group of co-workers and we never had a problem either and it wasn't because we had everything in writing but rather because we never won a jackpot.  We usually had 20-25 members and and the most we ever won was $1500 three times.  After taxes $1500 amounted to $50-$70 for each member which wasn't worth anyone arguing about, but had we won a jackpot and some one thought they could get a half million dollars by complaining, we would have had problems because there was someone dropping out or joining the group all the time.

I wasn't recommending groups and I don't recommend them.

I was just saying if you're going to be in one, it's best not to go in with people you don't know intimately.
