$203 MILLION: Powerball lottery jackpot heats up

Powerball

By Todd Northrop

There was no jackpot winner in the Wednesday drawing of the multi-state Powerball lottery game, causing the grand prize to increase to an estimated $203 million for Saturday's drawing.

Wednesday was the 12th consecutive drawing without a jackpot winner.

The estimated cash value for the new jackpot is $123.2 Million. After-tax cash and annuity prize amounts are reported state-by-state at USA Mega, a web site devoted to the Powerball and Mega Millions multi-state lottery games.

Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs.

Even though there were no jackpot winners, 9 lucky tickets matched the first five numbers for a $200,000 second-place prize: 1 from Colorado, 1 from Florida, 1 from New Jersey, 1 from New York, 1 from Pennsylvania, 2 from Texas, 1 from Virginia, and 1 from West Virginia.

The ticket sold in Colorado was purchased with the Power Play option, multiplying the prize to a sizeable $1 million.

61 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $10,000. Of those tickets, 6 also were purchased with the Power Play option, multiplying the prize by 3 for a total cash prize of $30,000.

The Powerball winning numbers for Wednesday, October 26, were 1, 18, 21, 39, and 55, with Powerball number 6. The Power Play number was 3.

Saturday's drawing will be only the fourth time in the past year that players are vying for a $200 million+ jackpot. On Aug. 10, 2011, a Minnesota couple won a $228.9 million Powerball jackpot (see Minnesota couple claims $229M Powerball lottery jackpot, Lottery Post, Aug. 13, 2011.)  Previous to that, on June 1, 2011, a group of 20 Costco workers from New York won $200 million prize, and on April 6, 2011, two men who worked together as welders in the small Southern Indiana town of Clarksville snagged a $221.7 million Powerball jackpot.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, any non-jackpot prize is multiplied from 2-5 times, depending on a computerized random number generated that evening. Second-place Power Play-enabled tickets matching five numbers but not the Powerball are always multiplied by 5 times, for a $1 million prize.

Powerball is now played in 42 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega.

I'll buy my regular set of numbers along with one quick-pick = $3 no more, no less.  Jackpot frenzy strikes every year around this time with people spending hundreds of dollars trying to hit the big one - only to find out the winner never played before and only spent one or two bucks on quick picks. LOL  Actually I'll probably spend more money on 203 - I like that number for New Jersey midday.Thumbs Up

Good luck everyone.Lep

Here in Pennsylvania we don't pay State Tax on Lottery winnings, so I will be very careful with the approximately $80,000,000 after 35% Federal Taxes! Thank you all for your past, present and future donations for my Saturday Powerball Retirement Plan winnings!

I will spread the wealth without anyone's help!

Thank you! I have actually liked Rolls-Royce/Bentley since I was about 8 years old. Half a century! There are some things that just speak to you. The craftmanship of the Bentleys is just so lacking in so many other cars. & the leather is unreal in person!

Best wishes to you also!

I have been away for quite a while and it seems, a lot has happened when I went incognito, LOL. $203 million, MY GOD! After taxes (we know we have to pay up, we have no choice in that matter), it would be an approximate $80 million, GOD, the things ANYONE  can do with that kind of money. Well, good luck to everyone this Saturday, may a deserving person win it, this weekend.

I Agree! The things that someone can do with that kind of money. Normally when the jackpot get this big it goes to a retired couple or a lottery group. The retired couple normally say it will not change their life much and leave the money with kids and grand kids. The lottery groups split the money up into a hundred parts and have enough left for a car and a vacation.Bandit

It is good to hear that you would help others RJOh if you were to win . What gets me is those people who win a enormous jackpot like this and state that the money will not have an effect on their life and nothing will change but a new truck. I think people like that should not even play. Bat

Very true, there are some very good causes out there that you could donate to like the March of dimes, breast cancer research, the red cross and the american heart association. Not to mention what you can do for your comunity, i live in a very small town and know our school and food bank would love any donations they could recieve. I know for my family and all the medical bills and everything else it would be a blessing to recieve a windfall like this!

Sounds like you got the idea if I won a lottery jackpot I would give it all away to others.

You misread my statement, I didn't say I would help others, I said I would help the local economy by spending my winnings instead of storing it away for the future as you implied most retired people do.

At my age my future is now and there are lots of things and services I would buy before I died if I had the money.   Building a new homes, buying a new car or two every year, hiring people and services  to maintain my home and me would help the local economy.  Providing jobs for people instead of charity is the way I would do it.

Haha that is so true.  It's usually the people who never play that decide to play once that win.  Also 203, ouch, lol.

I have $3 left aside as well.

If I am lucky enough to win I am going to give my money to my family.  Like my mother is getting $10 million and my sister and her husband are getting $5 million each.  Then every month I would donate to the food bank.  I would give back to my old high school too.  Yuo got to share the wealth around with that much money.  I would still live very comfortable with the rest of the money after I donated some of it away in various places and to various people.-weshar75

Excellent comment RJOh! I like your idea, but I'd still include charity where needed. There are so many animals in need, being dropped off at rescues that the rescues are all filling up. They could use a little bit of help. Some assistance to our poor rural areas would be called for also, buying materials and using local labor to repair and rebuild homes and churches, or supply schools. There's so much that can be done to give back that is not necessarily charity. Teach one to fish or farm, and they can feed themselves.

Good luck everyone!
