BATON ROUGE, La. — A 41-year-old woman from Greensburg, Louisiana, says she initially threw away a Powerball ticket for the March 23 drawing, but dug it out of the trash when she realized she hadn't checked the numbers.
It's a good thing she did. The ticket was worth $10,000.
Joyce Womack's ticket matched four of the first five numbers drawn as well as the Powerball number. The numbers drawn were: 17, 29, 31, 52, 53 and Powerball 31.
Womack says she didn't know exactly how much she'd won until arriving at Louisiana Lottery headquarters in Baton Rouge last Thursday. She received $7,000 after state and federal taxes were withheld. She plans to pay bills and put some money in the bank.
The winning ticket was purchased at Kentwood Plaza on Avenue G in Kentwood.
Powerball is now available in 43 states, plus U.S. Virgin Islands and Washington, D.C. Powerball tickets went on sale Monday in California for the first time.
Thanks to Original Bey for the tip.
Good for her. Even a diamond is found in tons of dirt.
Keep on digging.
Garbage picking is no longer considered degrading.
In New Jersey they just leave them in the trash ...............
Saved!
I wouldn't be surprised if someone else will try to claim the winnings by saying that THEY accidently threw the ticket away and Ms.Womack found it and cashed it in.
THAT WAS MY TICKET!!!!!
I WAS THE ONE WHO THREW IT IN HER TRASH CAN!!!!
How else would it get in the trash? The ticket belongs to the person who paid for it.
this story is DECODED to the fullest
she initially threw away...why would ms womack do that?

If the store she bought the lottery from has a CCTV, she would be able to prove that she bought the ticket.
That is debatable. It happened in MA and the lucky man and unlucky man had to go to court. It was settled before the trial run its course.

Thanks for the story. It talks about 2 cases, and both of them settled with the buyer of the ticket. To me the buyer is the rightful owner, and I think the courts might agree.
They settled meaning it could have gone either way had they not settled. Even the fact that it went into trial tells you that the judge decided its worth a trial. Both parties must have got nervous of losing everything and so decided to settle.
Judges try to meet in the middle anytime they can get away with it. I would have settled too.
