Do you really think 1 or 104 tickets makes that big of a difference when there are 175,000,000 possible numbers? What you're saying would make sense in a raffle, but not the lottery where there is such a high number of possibilities.

Whether it's 1 line for each draw of the year or 104 lines for one draw, your chances of winning are pretty much the same. If you have \$416 you want to use for research, go buy 104 lines for tonight, and then a single line ticket for tonight and for the following 103 draws. In a year, calculate your numbers and report back. And be aware, though almost literally impossible, only the 1 line ticket has the potential to win 104 jackpots or 104 second place prizes.

Mathematically it is still better to play 104 tickets in 1 drawing rather than 1 ticket in 104 drawings. After all, the goal is to win at least once, and the probability of doing so is highest with the "all-in" method. If you win once, then you could easily use those winnings to win as many more times as you can afford. Thus, the idea of 104 jackpots or whatever is unnecessary.

It doesn't matter if the difference is small, the fact is there is a difference. Most people don't have the restraint to play one draw a year. Almost everyone doesn't get entertainment out of the idea either. But it doesn't change the math. If I buy 104 tickets for a draw, I have a 1 in 1.752 million chance of winning (assuming all unique tickets). If I buy 1 ticket for a draw, I have a 1 in 175,223,510 chance of winning. And it's the same for every draw. That's math.

If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.
If a crystal ball showed you the future of the rest of your life, and in that future you will never win a jackpot, would you still play?

2017: 0% (0 tickets)
P&L % = Total Win(\$)/Total Wager(\$) - 1

So now anyone else care to venture a guess at the final annualized jackpot for tonite and see who gets closest without going over.

Doing this "Price is Right" style. Just for fun. Noone can use same number as someone else. Begins from start of thread.

Here's what we have so far based on provided estimates so far in this thread.

I will stop taking entries at ticket cutoff time. If jackpot rolls over then the rollover number is the result. If jackpot is won then tomorrow when todd posts final jackpot amount then we will see who was closest.

The game ends no matter if someone wins jackpot or not. SO if you think it's going to roll over then guess higher or not it's up to you. Don't go over HEHE. (c8  I will begin this game again on saturday if jackpot rolls over. anyone can guess begining on saturday for that game in the new thread created. i will gather the guesses together when i login on saturday.

What I would like to see is a whole lot of second prize winners like it happened in 2005 when a record 110 players matched 5+0.

If i remb right, that was due to fortune cookies coming up and hitting 2nd place, the poor lottery folks was like wtf with all these winners.

Then the  lottery folks kindly asked the fortune cookie makers to change there lottery numbers around more often rofl.

The lottery has reserves built in for such fortune/lost happen chance numbers coming up so they be alright if fate kicks them again.

I bid 501 million on the price is right contest!

And may I suggest starting a thread on the jackpot forums if you do this contest ever again. I like the idea a lot,  it's just adding walls of text into already large thread story.

As for the jackpot rolling over or being hit:

49 minutes left until cut-off for sales in some jurisdictions. Texas stops sales of PB at 9:00pm central time. (I have 5 tickets for tonite drawing already)

our little powerball price is right will continue until official cutoff time of 10:45PM eastern time.

ANYONE else care to add a guess to the mix tonite?

If you buy 1 line, you have a 99.9999994% chance of losing that draw. If you buy 104 lines, you have a 99.9999406% chance of losing that draw. So by playing 103 more lines, you have increased your chances by 0.00587999999%.

Like I said, the difference isn't that big.

I'd rather have a bad chance to win in 104 draws than having a slightly better, but still bad, chance of winning in 1 draw and zero chance of winning in 103 other draws.
