$415 MILLION: 3rd-largest Mega Millions jackpot ever

Mega Millions

By Todd Northrop

Lottery players across the United States will be lining up at lottery retailers for their chance to win Friday's massive $415 million Mega Millions jackpot, after nobody won Tuesday's $390 million grand prize.

The cash value stands at a staggering $286.4 million.

With the new Friday jackpot, both the annuity jackpot and lump-sum cash value are now in the top 10 United States lottery jackpots of all time.  The annuity and cash values are also the third-largest Mega Millions prizes ever seen. (See full top-25 list below.)

Friday's Mega Millions jackpot is the accumulation of an unprecedented 32 consecutive drawings without a top prize winner.  The current jackpot run-up started on March 11 as a $15 million grand prize.

Players should note that jackpot amounts are conservative estimates provided by the lotteries, and are often somewhat higher by the time the drawing occurs.

In the latest Mega Millions drawing that took place this past Tuesday night, there was no jackpot winner, but 2 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from New Jersey and 1 from Texas.

Neither of the second-prize winners purchased their ticket with the Megaplier option for an extra $1 per play. If they had, their prize would have been doubled to $2 million, because the Megaplier number drawn was 2.

The Megaplier option is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered with the Megaplier is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts. By law, California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.

A total of 99 tickets matched four of the first five numbers plus the Mega Ball to win a $5,000 prize. Of those tickets, 9 were purchased with the Megaplier option, increasing the prize to $10,000, and 13 were sold in California, where the prize awarded this drawing is $4,417.

The Mega Millions winning numbers for Tuesday, June 28, 2016, were 15, 17, 20, 35, and 55, with Mega Ball number 7. The Megaplier number was 2.

Following the Tuesday drawing, the Mega Millions annuity jackpot estimate was raised $25 million from its previous amount of $390 million. The cash value was raised by $21 million, from its previous amount of $265.4 million.

The near-parity of jackpot increase between the annuity and cash values points to low interest rates driven by the poor economy being a major culprit behind the slow increase of the annuity jackpot seen in the current run-up.  Three years ago, when Mega Millions was rising quickly every drawing, interest rates were ensuring an annuity increase of around 75% more than the cash value increase.  Today, it's less than 20%.

Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $1 each.

The Mega Millions winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after the drawing takes place.

Top 25 United States lottery jackpots of all time

Friday's Mega Millions jackpot currently stands as the 10th-largest lottery jackpot of all time in the United States.  That position may rise before the drawing Friday night, as lotteries are typically conservative in their initial estimates, and brisk sales may push the jackpot estimate higher by draw time.

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure not even the billion dollar Powerball got that many combo's sold. They said on the news at the time that only 83% of PB's 292M combo's  were used.

UMMM.... The Texas winner is nowhere close to any body of water. The ticket was purchased in the western part of the state, far from the Gulf of Mexico.

In order to get a frenzy, it needs to be covered by the news and other media. It isn't being covered and thus it won't get many occasional players attention.

I hope to be the sole winner here in California. $172,988,270.00 will be the amount I will end up with after the deduction and all taxes are paid by tax day in April, 2017.

Lump Sum all the way because of what Todd wrote about interest rates being so low.

I am confident that my discount stock brokerage will teach me how to trade stocks successfully.

The winners' life will change suddenly and a lot of past winners were not ready to win.

I will not forget where I came from. LP included.

l called it and you know it.  When l write " the winner/ winners will be close to a body of water"  l mean that the winner resides in the State that is close to the Ocean. Btw- how do you know if there is not a healthy spring or lake close to where the ticket was purchased? See?

I looked on the Texas lottery website and it said the town it was purchased in. I wikipedia'd it, The town was named after a hot spring nearby that has since dried up.

Texas was an independent country before becoming a State. It has a lot of history. Texans are a proud people. The early twentieth Century in Texas is interesting.

I agree. I had read that anywhere from 82-86% of PB combinations were sold for the $1.6 billion drawing. Even with a buying frenzy pushing a $5 billion jackpot, i highly doubt that every single combination would be sold- it may reach 97-99%.

Between under 18 and people who won't buy a ticket, only about 20% of the population would buy atleast one combo, and most would only buy 1 or 2 tickets. 60M buyers, most buying 1 or 2, can't possibly cover 99% of 292M combo's.

If the jackpot were to reach anywhere close to $5 billion- odds would be pretty good that over 80-90% of the US. adult population would participate. Even my husband who frowns on playing the lottery would purchasd a ticket.

Is that due to the current investment options of MUSL? That's never quite clear to me. It shouldn't, because cash isn't invested Thinking of...

Good luck to anyone who is in it to win it. Gonna be a looong week end for a winner, what with the 4th coming up and lots of alcohol coming down.

The cash value is high because jackpot annuities are invested in safe government bonds which yields very little. With the current cash value ratio most financial experts I have spoken with would opt for the upfront cash. Personally even if the cash value was less than 50% I would still take the cash instead of the structured annuity which pays the bulk of the payments towards the end.

Your insistence that your original "call" was correct is quite annoying. Given that more than half of the 44 states that sell MM border a large body of water you might have well said that the MM winner would be female (currently 50.9%). Furthermore, there wasn't a MM jackpot winner last night. $1 million is nothing to sneeze at but is a far cry from $390 million.

Please send your kindergarten teacher an apology letter.

Well, here's a thought I've never considered (and my apology and credit to those who have):

When we all go to get our lotto tickets, there should be, included in the ticket checker/computer, a program that can tell you:

"189 tickets are registered to play that combination for tonight's game."  (just as an example.)
(of course it would require you to check your numbers before the drawing even begins)

Then, of course, you'll be tempted to go back and play more tickets for that drawing.
It's up to [you] if you want to play more, but at least it's giving you a "second chance", so to speak, to jump back in line, if you want.

I suspect it won't take off, for one reason, because it would require the use of Cray computing, or the like.

I think this would 'add a level of fairness' to this game, never before seen, at the same time getting more money from you.

In the long run, it would decrease the amount of split pots. It would make every drawing a "truer" surprise.

I apologize if this is high-jacking the thread, but I'd really like to know from members,
what would be wrong with this idea.

Thanks, and Good luck to all in tonight's PB drawing.

First of all, for a multi-state game like MegaMillions you're talking about more than forty states with more than a thousand terminals each which would have to update the main computer every minute which in turn would have to do the same to them.  All that computer time and energy to create data every minute that now takes at least an hour or two to compile after the drawings now.

$265,000,000 / 7000 = $37,857 give or take...

You forgot about taxes. Withholdings are activated at $5,001 and above. 38,000 minus 25% federal comes out to $28,500 and that's not even taking into account state taxes.

You are looking at it the wrong way.  If someone wins on the upcoming draw,  it is unlikely to make national news because the jackpot hasn't reached new highs,  so whoever wins they can fly under the radar as long as they don't make waves that interest the liberal mainstream media,  the only attention the winner will get is the media in the winners home state.

The odds don't change, only the jackpot amount does. I read somewhere that people start really buying when the jackpot is over 50% of the largest jackpot they ever saw. For the past 4 years it was the 656M jackpot so 329M and above got people interested, now it'll need atleast 700M to get to that level. Although with the way the games have been acting, it's easily conceivable that we'll get there this year.

I Agree! But that's not what i was talking about.  There are far more players who only buy tickets when it gets high up than players who buy every draw. These occasional players often only know that there is a big jackpot when the media reports on it. One thing l do remember from what you call the Bush economy was being told by the Prez that the Surplus money was going to be returned to its citizens because it was the right thing to do"- then the following year they wanted you to repay it. So if you got a cheque for $1500.00, you had better make sure that you plan to have $1500.00 come tax time.

Then, [they] could put a window on the the time frame that players would be allowed to take advantage of this new component.

This window would only be available 5 hours, let's say, prior to the drawing for that night.

Plus, then also, they could split up the computing task state by state, but would require each participating state to have its own
"double checker computer".

Then, after the 5 hours, ALL 40 participating states, or whatever, could network into the single, main computer, for the final tally (this final tally would be like we see on USAMEGA, where you get the new jackpot value, AND how many people got the 2nd prize, etc.)

Of course, this would only work, if all states got "on board" with that system.

Just my 2¢ worth.

The Powerball site that has other games says that Mega Millions will roll so if correct i'm right.

You were right. Another record setting roll.

Crazy.

I looked on the Texas lottery website and it said the town it was purchased in. I wikipedia'd it, The town was named after a hot spring nearby that has since dried up.

As long as you have a ticket where all the numbers match...you only need ONE TICKET!

BananaDanceHurray!CoffeeParty

I'd like to buy one and win with it.

I don't think with this new current amount that people will be buying

just one and that includes me.

10 this time at all different places.

And you're right, it just takes one to win and I hope one of those is the winner.

How about that historic rollover............LOL

This will become a multi billion $ jackpot and like I said, no one will win until ALL possible number combinations are sold.

At its current pace, none of us will live that long to see it get to multi-billion.

Now the jackpot has grown to $449 million dollars after 33 straight drawings without a top prize winner.

I think I'm done with MM and PB,at least for a while  the odds are just too long.

I'll stick to cash 3/4 and the occasional scratch off.

Talking about politics is one of the most annoying things about this site. It's why I usually just check my numbers and leave.

I Agree! No truer words have ever been spoken on this site. Add the frequently hurled racist remarks and you pretty much have a clear picture. Thousands of political blogs and sites out there and they still have to choose a lottery site to bring in comment after comment about politics even when it has absolutely nothing to do with the subject matter. When I first found this site, I was very excited about the information it provided and would be on here at least once a day. Now it's the very occasional visit.

'The headline reads the Mega Millions is at $415 million. A perfect and appropriate time to post a negative remark about someone else's political affiliation' said no rational person ever.

If this jackpot is going to be won this month...it might well be one on friday

Jan 8 and March 8 are the dates of MM won this year.

Call me lame, but just trying to make this fun for myself

My mother's birthday is on the 7th....so I sure do hope the winner is meBananaBananaBanana
