N.C. man safeguards winning lottery ticket inside of paint sprayer

FLETCHER, N.C. — When most people win the lottery, their first thought is how to spend the money. When Christopher Gueho of Fletcher won $750,000 playing Jumbo Bucks, his first thought was where to hide his ticket.

"I was a nervous wreck," Gueho said.

Gueho, a maintenance worker at a retirement home, wanted to keep his ticket in a safe place until he could claim his prize.

"At first I thought I'd store it in the spare room at my mom's home," Gueho said. "Then I thought maybe the freezer, because no one would look behind the pork chops for a lottery ticket."

In the end, he stored it in a paint sprayer until he brought it to lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Wednesday. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $519,378.

He plans to use the money to buy a house.

"I never thought I'd be able to have my own home," Gueho said.

He bought the $10 ticket at Kounty Line Fletcher on Hendersonville Road in Arden.

I like the way you think!

I better start planning where to place my winning ticket.

It's mind boggling. If I put it in the safe...it's not water proof sealed so if by a fluke a water pipe burst..there goes my winning ticket. Forget the freezer..too much stuff that has ink on its packaging...it would mar the ticket.

Can't put it in  a shoe box...a fire could erupt. You'd think I could find a safe place ...

Guess I'll drive up to our claims center and camp out til they open... just hope there isn't a govt holiday...I could be there waiting awhile!

Congrats on his win!

His neighbor might have wanted to borrow the paint sprayer.

What is wrong with a safety deposit box in your bank. You will need that time to get all of your ducks in a row. It is inconvenient but a good step.

Enjoy the show as everyone will be looking for the winner.

Especially for Wednesday's Power Ball $236 million.  The ATTH After tax take home amount for a Californian, Washington State, or Texan will be $94,344,800.00

Good Luck LP'ers!

instead of worrying about where to hide it. just go down the next day and cash it. no need to get all your ducks in a row for this paltry amount that most everyone on here would sneer at and wouldn't be bothered trying to win anyway.  if you really need time just put it in an envelope with a stamp and mail it to yourself. if you can't trust the usps who can you trust. if you do that no one can steal it from you if they even knew you had it. certainly don't tell anyone ever if you hit the lottery until you cash it. or you could take it to the today show like those hillbillies from tennessee did a while back uncashed. which would rank #1 all time of the most foolish moves in lottery winners history.

.

I'd need to win at least that much (after taxes).
What I probably would have done is give it to a family member, an older person that wouldn't mind having to deal with it come tax time, and that I trust would at least have split it up, within the family.

Seems like the easiest option, for that amount.  Of course they'd need to be instructed on the "trust thing", and whatever else the lawyer advised.

But chances are you have more cans than paint guns. You'd have to eat your way through a lot of beans to find your ticket again.

Skibunnylk, Be calm enough to sign your name on the ticket, claim form, tax papers, and the jackpot election claim form for the lump sum.

Do not be like the woman in Bakersfield, CA who let her son sign his name to all of the above. She had to sue him to get her winnings. Etta May Urquhart. I looked at her husband in the photos that the Lottery office provided and he knew something was wrong. He was not happy and did not smile.

Good Luck to all LP Members and staff.

Ohio did it again, twice this week.  Tuesday $1 million on MM; last night $5 on MM because they spent the extra dollar for Megaplier.  Keep it up Ohio and you'll knock New Jersey out of the running for most second tier winners!

omg this ^^^^^^^ seriously.

I guess though given the fact that he is a maintenance man this may be an exorbitant amount to him.  It would be enough to pay off the mortgage on my nearly 30 year old home and completely renovate it, bringing it into the year 2016.  I could never quit my job or anything with only 500K.  I would get a new car as mine is coming up on 10 years old, buy my son a car.  I am a professional so I would keep my job along with my health care plan.  That's just not enough money to get your panties in a wad over.
