His second win, and his second time taking care of others

By Kate Northrop

SALISBURY, N.C. — After winning the lottery for the second time, a North Carolina man will once again use his $100,000 prize to take care of those in need.

A North Carolina resident is ready to put his lottery winnings to work once more, using his $100,000 win to help children in his community.

Cristien Breton was shopping at the Food Lion on Mahaley Avenue in Salisbury when he took a chance on a $30 "$100,000 Cash Payday" scratch-off ticket.

Uncovering one of the top prizes of $100,000, he realized it was his second time winning a major lottery prize. He had previously won a $2 million prize in August 2024 on a "Platinum" scratch-off ticket, the North Carolina Lottery said.

"I could not believe it happened again," Breton laughed with Lottery officials. "I've been very lucky."

He had won the prize on the night of Aug. 6, and by the time he was at Lottery headquarters in Raleigh the very next day, Breton was already resolute in how he planned on using the winnings.

"I took care of my mom the last time, and this time I want to help take care of the community," he explained in a press release. "I want to help underprivileged kids who are going back to school."

After federal and state taxes, Breton collected a sum of $72,018.

"It feels awesome," Breton said. "I am definitely blessed."

According to the Lottery, Rowan County, Breton's home county, received $7.7 million in support from lottery funds last year. Details about the impact of lottery dollars on all of North Carolina's 100 counties are available on the "Impact" section of the North Carolina Lottery's website.

Following Breton's claim, there are currently 56 out of 80 top prizes of $100,000 remaining in the $30 "$100,000 Cash Payday" scratch-off game, which launched in March. There are also seven out of ten second-tier prizes of $30,000 and 115 out of 157 third-tier prizes of $3,000 left to win.

The overall odds of winning any prize in the game are 1 in 3.49.
