Mega MillionsMega Millions: Mega Millions lottery ticket worth $61 million sold in CaliforniaRating:

By Todd Northrop

The winning ticket for Friday night's Mega Millions drawing was sold in Laguna Hills, California.

The ticket matching all six winning numbers was purchased at a 7-Eleven located at 27001 Moulton Parkway, according to a news release Saturday from the California Lottery.

The winner, who has not yet come forward, will have the choice of taking the annual payments over 29 years, accumulating to $61 million, or taking a lump sum cash payout of $37.3 million.

The winning numbers were 6, 13, 18, 20, and 31, with Mega Ball number 13. The Megaplier was 4.

The numbers drawn were all "birthday numbers" — numbers 31 or lower — so it was not a surprise for seasoned lottery players to see that a winning ticket was sold. Choosing numbers based on birthdays is very common, so there are many tickets sold with all the numbers being 31 or lower.

The California Lottery is advising the winning ticket holder to immediately sign the back of the ticket with ink, keep it in a safe place, and visit any of the nine Lottery District Offices or contact Lottery officials.

The winner has up to one year from the date of the draw to claim the jackpot.

The 7-Eleven will receive a whopping $305,000 retail bonus for selling the winning ticket, the lottery said.

This is the second time the golden state has been home to a Mega Millions jackpot this year, the California lottery said. In January, Jack Freney won the $191 million Mega Millions jackpot after purchasing a Mega Millions ticket in the San Bernardino County town of Nipton.

Mega Millions is currently offered for sale in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $1 each.

In October, Mega Millions ticket prices will be increasing to $2 each and the game's jackpot will become a little more difficult to win.

The Mega Millions winning numbers are published at USA Mega (www.usamega.com) minutes after each drawing takes place.

Congratulations to a fellow Californian! There are no State nor City taxes on Lottery winnings. That will save the winner 13.3% which is the top rate here in CA. The winner will pay sales taxes on all the purchases he makes.

The winner will get a check in the amount of $27,975,000.00  The winner will pay an additional 14.6% to the IRS next April. The After Tax Take Home "ATTH" amount will be $22,529,200.00 Which is still a decent amount for a one dollar bet which will increase next October to $2.00

I forgot to mention that if the winner earns income during the rest of 2017 he/she will owe taxes on that too. Most likely at the top rate also. A CPA, Accountant, or enrolled agent will be necessary.

I'm curious, if the 7-11 receive 305,000...is that being evenly disbursed among the employees? Or does the store owner greedily takes it all?

American Indian, The current tax regime began in 1913. The Politicians "promised" that only the rich would be taxed. Americans let that camel stick it's nose inside the tent and soon the entire camel was inside.

The automatic withholding was another smart move by the IRS. It is painless and not seen.

Our current President, Donald Trump, is planning on lowering the top rate to 30%. I hope he succeeds in making this happen. That would lower it from 39.6% to 30%.

If you invest your lottery winnings than you will definitely love Trump's new tax plan.

The store owner gets the cheque. What he or she does with it from that point on is entirely up to them.BTW, there is nothing greedily about it.The owner requested the installation of the machine, the owner pays out of their cash register amounts under $600 on the spot. I have yet to see the workers opening their wallets and rounding up the cash amongst themselves to pay any winner...have you?

Maybe greedily was the wrong description. But...some clerk had to have sold that person the ticket right? Maybe not the store owner but the clerk.

I mean who knows maybe they get broke off something, even if it's like $500 or $1,000 per employee. But even then i could see conditions to it. So and so called in and doesn't get the check etc.

That said, the tax woes of winning mega millions sounds like a mess. I don't think it seems fair to tax that person's regular income at the highest rate. Seems like when you take the lump sum, they already take off all the taxes.
