Michigan residents apparently aren't checking their lottery tickets, as a $1 million prize went unclaimed on Thursday — for the third time this year, the state lottery said.
The lottery reported the ticket "expired at 4:45 p.m. and was purchased at the Speedway gas station located at 10070 Highland Road in Hartland." The money now goes to the state School Aid Fund, the lottery said.
In Michigan, Powerball tickets are valid for one year after the drawing date. (A list of lottery ticket expiration periods by state can be found on USA Mega's Ways to Win Powerball page.)
It was the third $1 million prize to go unclaimed in 2019 after two $1 million Mega Millions prizes went unclaimed in March and earlier this month.
But the three opportunities people missed to claim the $1 million lottery this year do not compare to the unclaimed prize missed in 1998.
The record for an unclaimed Lottery prize in Michigan was set in 1998 when a $34 million prize went unclaimed. The winning Michigan Lotto game ticket was purchased at the Meijer located at 1350 West Lake Lansing Road in East Lansing.
The Michigan Lottery does provide a sure-fire way to prevent players from overlooking lottery wins: playing online, where a computer system checks their lottery tickets and notifies the player of wins.
The Michigan Lottery currently offers several draw games to Michigan residents to play over the Internet, including Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto 47, and Fantasy 5.
Thanks to www.usamega.com for listing Michigan State tax at 4.25% in the Jackpot Analysis.
Add 4.25% + 37% Federal rate = 41.25% total taxes on an annuity. On a Lump Sum the prize will be reduced some more.
Before deductions and taxes. $1,000,000.00 = 20 years X $50,000.00 per year.
That little piece of paper has claimed $1.6 Billion dollars American. Players! Wake up.
It's so sad that $Billions of Lottery Winnings go Unclaimed:

I think Sully should check her tickets!
l for one am not surprised. Michiganders have lots of disposal income, missing a million dollars here & there is no biggie.
It’s because no one even won $1 Million outside of state officials so how can any one claim ?
Indeed, a review of Lottery Post's past news stories on the subject reveals many unclaimed prize stories:

Thanks Todd: Is Tag something new?
Thank you Vergie I check them twice then one more time to be sure.
Nope, it's been there as long as news stories have been published here — for more than 16 years. (Which is a gold mine, since you can easily research topics with one mouse click.)
Look on the right side of any news story. You'll see the tags for that story. Click a tag to see more stories that use the same tag.
Or, go to the Tag Cloud (near the top of the Resources menu) to see and select from all the available tags.
Thanks Todd: I haven't seen Tag used before, so I thought I'd ask, but not before searching the Help Forum, and not finding any Reference to Tag or its uses.
You have to be in it to win it as the saying goes. But evidently being in it here and winning means nothing. Oh well!
It's a common Internet thing (tagged news stories/searching by tag), so not really something I've focused on a help article about. Here's a Wikipedia article that describes tags: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tag_(metadata)
I always check my tickets so I know it was not me!😁
You're welcome...don't forget who your friends are!
With stories like these am always hoping the player never finds out about throwing away a million dollars.
Yesterday received a phone call to play 444 in KY. Did I play...NO, did it come in...yes. They paid out just over $1.1 million last night.
How Many Of These Phone Calls With Numbers To Play Do You Get?
And How Many Of These Numbers Do You Actually Play?
Say In A Week Or Month.
Why play if you're so neglectful? Also, I believe you have to be worthy of winning a claimer amount, sometimes karma & fate have a big part in it.
It was close to 10 years ago that she called and said play 911 and didn't===came in.
One time driving home 018 was in front of me on the KY tag...first part of my SSAN...didn't play, came in.
I rarely, almost never, play pick 3 or pick 4.
What she does is keeps track of OH #'s where she lives and GA where her Sister lives and KY where one of her Brothers lives and somehow watches them and deduces when they will hit. She really isn't all that accurate, however that being said next time she is adamant the money is getting plunked down.
LottoBux, this is your answer.
LottoBux I didn't reply correctly, it is a couple of posts down.
Wish I had a phone call like this too, as in Ohio 444 did come out Thurs PM ( Oct 3 ) pick 3 drawing..... paid out over 2.238 million $.
Who is "she" and why does she call you with lotto numbers? A crazy aunt, a service where you pay a subscription fee to get a few calls every month, something else...?
Nettie is a good friend from Cincinnati. Her and boyfriend have been down here for Christmas dinner, things like that. May see them next weekend. She gets kind of obsessed with the numbers so another reason I hadn't played.
You're on top of my list.
Is it possible Religion has something to do with it? Michigan has lots of Muslims, I don't believe they are allowed to gamble. If it is against the Religion, maybe afraid to claim.
Muslim scholars agree that it is acceptable or even commendable for Muslims to participate in healthy challenges, competitions, and sports. It is forbidden, however, to be involved with any betting, lottery, or other games of chance. There is some disagreement about whether raffles should be included in the definition of gambling.
Yay!...& thanks!
You're on mine too nice lady!
Dammit Sully...stop falling off the wagon and check your darn tickets...................................Ya lush !!
Let's discuss this some more, over a beer or 2 or 3.
Too bad I stopped drinking years ago...I'll have a diet coke please!
But then again maybe it's not "too bad"!
Keep looking for the tickets Sully...did you look good in the car...how about the glove compartment!
Remember there are 3 tickets missing in Michigan!...THREE!
They sure would not go missing in NC!...we're very careful here!
