Powerball Jackpot Grows to $85 Million

PowerballPowerball: Powerball Jackpot Grows to $85 Million
The jackpot in America's favorite lottery game is on the way up again. There were no Powerball jackpot winners Saturday but 543,766 players across the nation won a total of more than $5.5 million in prizes.

Because no one correctly matched all six numbers in Saturday's drawing the jackpot will grow to an estimated $85 million. That's the largest lottery jackpot in the country.

The cash option for the Wednesday, August 20 drawing will be an estimated $43.5 million.

The numbers drawn were: 13, 15, 20, 37, 42, and the Powerball was 7. The Power Play multiplier was 5.

Nine players correctly matched the 5 white numbers and won $100,000. The tickets were sold in Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Hampshire, and South Carolina (4). Two of the winning South Carolina players purchased the Power Play option. By spending the extra dollar those players multiplied their prize by 5 for a total win of $500,000!

Thirty-two players matched 4 white numbers plus the Powerball and won $5,000. Five of those players purchased the Power Play option, giving them a total win of $25,000.

More than 61,000 winning Powerball players multiplied their prize by 5 Saturday. They were able to do that by purchasing the Power Play option for one dollar. With Power Play you can multiply your winnings, except for the jackpot. At the beginning of each drawing a wheel is spun to select that night's multiplier.

Players should carefully check their tickets after every draw. Even if there are no jackpot winners there are always tens of thousands of winners at other prize levels.

Players purchased more than 19 million tickets between Thursday and Saturday night.

The lotteries sold $1.6 billion in Powerball tickets in 2002. That translates into more than $480 million for worthwhile state projects.
