Economy Slows to Near Crawl
WASHINGTON (AP) - The economy skidded to a near halt in the final quarter of last year, clobbered by dual slumps in housing and credit that caused people and businesses to spend and invest more sparingly. The Commerce Department reported Thursday that the gross domestic product increased at a scant 0.6 percent pace in the October-to-December quarter. The reading - unchanged from an initial estimate a month ago - underscored just how much momentum the economy...

Addicted Doctors Are Allowed To Practice
SAN FRANCISCO -- Troubling cases in which doctors were accused of botching operations while undergoing treatment for drugs or alcohol have led to criticism of rehab programs that allow thousands of U.S. physicians to keep their addictions hidden from their patients. Nearly all states have confidential rehab programs that let doctors continue practicing as long as they stick with the treatment regimen. Nationwide, as many as 8,000 doctors may be in such programs,...

"Give Peaceniks a Chance?
My feelings are that if an competent adult knowingly places themselves in a battle zone protesting the war and is kidnapped, then they did so knowing that was a real possibility and a consequence of the actions they undertook. Great if they can be rescued in the NORMAL course of military operations, but otherwise hope they manage to convince their captors to spare them until the end of the war. Life's tough sometimes....

Revisionist history II
The last entry was intended to be about the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 (the Terrors), and the fact that Jemez Pueblo has decided to change history a bit to make it appear something to celebrate. For 300 years New Mexicans have celebrated Fiesta on or about September 15. That celebration is in honor of the return of the Spaniards, peaceful re-conquest by Diego De Vargas without firing a shot, the tribes heaving sighs of relief that normalcy could now return. However,...
