Ohio Lottery's new Keno game off to slow start
The bingo-like lottery game that began this summer in Ohio to help plug the gaping hole in the state budget is off to a slow start. Keno has been hindered by a weak economy and challenges getting it established at 2,000 bars and restaurants, said Mike Dolan, executive director of the Ohio Lottery. The game is a central part of Gov. Ted Strickland's plan to insulate the state budget from the economic downturn that has dried up tax revenue. Keno started Aug. 4 and sales were roughly $32 m

Lottery juggling whether to ban smoking at ticket outlets
The Texas Lottery Commission is considering a ban on selling tickets in stores that allow smoking after a recent attorney general's opinion suggested the practice could open the state to civil rights lawsuits. Anti-smoking and civil rights advocates urged the commission at a meeting Wednesday to re-evaluate how it licenses vendors and to not allow smoking where tickets are sold. They are concerned that secondhand smoke prevents people with disabilities or illnesses related to smoke from bu

California lottery shorted schools by $36 million, auditor says
Here is the full report on the CA auditor website: https://www.auditor.ca.gov/reports/2019-112/index.html In section 3 under Sections they really go after the State Controller Office, lol. The back and forth in the responses section is also a good read. Mostly it's just another interagency duck measuring contest, but Betty Yee (controller) is an elected official and Elaine Howle (auditor) is appointed, so it's mostly Betty's behind on the line. The question now is, will the lottery pay the $3

WVa board admonishes former lottery director for moonlighting
This story confirms what I've always said about appointments to executive and leadership positions at a state lottery agency. They are largely given away as favors to political allies because the lottery can pretty much run itself once it's been set up. Make a big donation to the governor's election campaign, and get your wife's nephew's wife appointed as a VP of such and such at lotto head quarters. I mean, lots of state agencies are like that, but the lottery especially so. Vendors like Scient

Mississippi Lottery targets Dec. 1 startup date
The Mississippi Lottery Corporation says it plans for stores to be selling scratch-off lottery tickets by Dec. 1. That's the target date, said Gerard Gibert, vice chairman of the lottery board. It could be a little before, or a little after we haven't selected the vendors yet... But the plan is to have scratch-offs in as many retailers as possible by Dec. 1. Gibert said the plan is to come out with regular state drawing tickets sometime in the first quarter of 2020, and multi-state ticke

DOJ 'did not address' lotteries in Wire Act opinion, Deputy AG Rosenstein says in memo
The OLC opinion did not address whether the Wire Act applies to State lotteries and their vendors. The Department is now reviewing that question. Don't we have enough other problems that DOJ should be involved with rather than opening the door for states rights lawsuits?

SC Lottery will set aside $19.6 million for potential payouts to cover glitch
Congrats to the players holding such tickets. Looking more and more likely they'll be paid in full. This incident well illustrates how much lotteries depend on vendors for day to day operations. It's possible SC Lottery could recover some of the $19.6 million from Intralot. Also, longer this issue lingers, more chance of SC Lottery and/or others not hiring Intralot in the future. Promptly paying out the players will likely be best for all parties involved.

Mass. Lottery ends some scratch ticket games before grand prizes paid out
Original Post by Ron5995 Glad to see mainstream media investigate this. [...] While numbers rigging (ie. Hot Lotto) scandals have received much press, there's likely far more cheating of players happening in the instant scratch off realm. For all U.S. lotteries combined, closing instant scratch off games early and other questionable activity (ie. insiders buying known winning packs; pulling individual packs known to contain a top prize winner) could potentially be shorting players hundre

Details of new Illinois Lottery manager deal kept secret
As the Illinois Lottery edges closer to finalizing a massive deal with a new private manager, the state and the firm have chosen to keep many of the details secret despite past pledges of transparency. The deal includes a tiered incentive system in which the new firm, Camelot Illinois, would be paid bonuses for exceeding various profit levels, documents show. But the proposed dollar amounts are not included. That was among the few bits of information in the heavily redacted records the sta
