Major claim deadline approaching for Illinois lottery winner of $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot
They don't have as much time as it seems By Kate Northrop A crucial deadline for claiming the record-breaking $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot drawn in July is approaching for the single Illinois-based lottery winner. The lone Illinois winner of the unimaginable $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot is only weeks away from a major deadline that could have a huge impact on the amount of money they get to walk away with. For a prize of this magnitude, it's not unusual for the wi

Why isn't there a choice to split the Lump sum and the Annuity?
Obviously an option, but it's an inferior option. The lottery invests the entire untaxed cash value, but if you take the cash you'll only be able to invest what's left after you've paid taxes. Current cash/annuity values are a bit lower, but if we figured the cash value of the $50 million mentioned by the OP was 60% a split option directly from the lottery would give you $15 million cash (pre-tax, or about $7.5 to $10 million net) and a $25 million annuity. The DIY option would start as $30 m

Joining a lottery club?
It would be too hard to get a group of pool players to agree to taking the annuity unless they are all family about the same age. Pool players are in a pool because they want to get the money and be done with it. And they want immediate control of their share. As an individual winner, at my age, it would make sense to take the lump sum for three reasons. 1) The possibility of growing the money faster. 2) Taxes would be paid at today's rate (37%). 3) Avoiding a huge tax on the kids in

$1.2 BILLION: Powerball jackpot grows to 4th-largest in history
I believe this will be a record-breaking Jackpot! I think it's got a very good chance of setting a record if it hasn't already. We've had 38 rollovers so far, which is at least close to a record for PB (and maybe MM). That we didn't see an increase in the advertised jackpot today makes me think it's not going to get much past 1.2 billion, and that makes me think that even with another rollover it might not set a new annuity record by Saturday. Of course that would only be a pretend reco

North Carolina 18-year-old wins $1 million in lottery after asking sister to buy ticket for him
I think younger folks should take the annuity, even though you don't mention 20 years of tax liability. It is not always the best option. Decades ago I'd say Cash option when we had to do that @ time of purchase. Not the case @ my age. No way would I take an annuity.

$1.7 billion in combined jackpots, as USA multi-state lottery games peak together
Once again, they've been fortunate enough that when interest rates changed sales magically increased exactly enough for the advertised annuity to remain the same. Assuming that current cash value is realistic the annuity would have been bumped to about 991.5 if the interest rate hadn't changed. If it rolls (about an 82% chance) it goes to $1.1 billion and $525 million cash.

Decrease of cash value
Hello everyone, not sure if this topic was discussed before, but i'm sure most of us noticed that the cash value for major lotteries such as Powerball and Megamillions had decreased over few years. For instance, the average ratio for cash to annuity in 2020 for Megamillions lottery used to be 73%, 70% in 2021, 60% in 2022 and this year it is less that 50%, the current ratio for the draw on 17th October is 45%. What is the reason for that? Is this a kind of trick to make the winners opt for the a

$1.725 BILLION: Powerball jackpot now 2nd-largest of all time
This is (usually) because of fluctuations in the interest rates etc when they calculate the annuity payout. For example, The current cash ratio is ~40% of jackpot. Back in the COVID period (2021-22) it hit 83%.. because interest rates were at an all-time low, so the annuity wasn't worth as much...
