I know that this is technically not a lottery question, it's about PCH Sweepstakes bankruptcy .
He bought a house on six acres, presumably with a 30 year mortgage. $260k a year minus taxes minus reasonable living expenses and a 5 year mortgage would pay for a decent house. Of course, he could save up the money for a few years and then pay cash, but that would cost a lot more if he was renting. It's not so much the mortgage itself but being mortgaged to the hilt. Borrowing as much as possible and spending every penny is a really bad idea.

Idaho man wins the lottery for the 18th time over 30 years
He says playing [the] lottery is simply something he and his wife have always done for fun together, the Lottery explained. Stopping for gas. Picking up groceries. Grabbing a ticket along the way. It's become part of life. I believe this is true for so many of us, maybe we are stopping at the wrong places Congratulations on the win. Aside: I would like to see a spread sheet of the weekly or monthly lottery budget or money spent

Nevadans mourn shuttering of California Lottery's top-selling retailer
Nevada should have their own state lottery. The argument that the casinos are against a state lottery because it takes money away from them is ignorant and simply stupid. Every Nevada restaurant and bar has tabletop games. Every gas station and convenience store has slot machines. Those take far more $$$ from the casinos than a state lottery every could. The casinos could sell lottery tickets (like any other retailer) and get their guaranteed 6%, which I m guessing is a higher return than so

Arizona Lottery delays expiration date of $12.8 million jackpot-winning ticket in legal battle
Even if Circle K was a charity why would they want any money to go to the person who used a debit card to buy other tickets but was never a purchaser of the winning ticket? I suppose there's a possibility that they'd like to give them a modest amount since Circle K would never have become the lawful owner of a jackpot winning ticket if it weren't for that person, but I can't imagine any reason they'd ever suggest the ticket belongs to that person instead of Circle K. this is a p.r. win

Oregon Lottery Corruption
I am the person who just ended 3 Lottery schemes and have been exposing a multi billion dollar ponzi like scheme by falsifying prize tickets and inflating prizes and revenues. Billions are money laundered through illegal and unregulated VLT's each year. Why? So the State of Oregon could use these falsified Lottery net proceeds to sell over $8 Billiion in Lottery Revenue bond debt obligations now owed.
