Our pool buys tickets in California. With no state tax, that leaves more money to divide among members of the pool in the event we win big. But with that comes some bad news. The prizes are parimutuel. In all other jurisdictions, the second place prize is at least $2 million. In California it varies based on how often it is won. In the next draw, second place prize is only about $0.5 million. We have to take the good with the bad.
