That's my thought too. I've seen several winners here who got no press when they won a few hundred thousand, but when they win again even if it's just 50K it suddenly becomes news. Since I live in a non-anonymous state, that would concern me.

From a conversation I once had with a New Jersey Lottery official, winners aren't obligated to share their story or plans. Instead, the impression I got is that some winners will freely volunteer info about their experience like a hey, why not? sort of thing since they figure they can remain anonymous under state law anyway. The Lottery sure doesn't mind!

This day and age all you need is a name and you can go knock on the person's door. If I lived in a non anonymous state like California, I would still very minimally check with a lottery attorney to see if I missed anything even if I was 99.9 % certain of the answer. i think the secrecy is to deter scammers. there are just too many out there these days. Scammers are one reason to (try to) remain anonymous. People you already know are often another good reason.
