I am getting harassed by family over a $5,000 lottery win. :(
I like this idea with a few tweaks. Instead of a check, a money order and instead of involving a third party, type the note and print it out. But I would not give instructions. Because if she was in dire need then no way would she be using it to party etc she'd take care of the thing she needed the money for. That's just a bit problematic if the $500 was supposed to be a loan and not a gift. If that or any gift revealing who you are isn't a problem you can just mail modest amounts in the form of a postal money order (in that US, at least; I don't know about other countries' options). If you win enough you can also hire a lawyer to handle the donation. That can also be a good idea for charitable donations, so the charity can't keep
