Store owner jailed one year for stealing $5.7M lottery ticket
A former convenience store owner who cheated a customer out of a $5.7 million lottery ticket has been sentenced to a year in jail.
Hafiz Malik, 63, sat quietly as Ontario provincial court Justice Rebecca Shamai pronounced sentence Tuesday at Old City Hall courthouse in downtown Toronto.
Dressed in a black T-shirt and grey slacks, the white-haired Malik listened intently to the judge's reasons.
In December, Malik had pleaded to fraud.

Seven arrested in underground lottery sting
Seven people are facing felony bookmaking charges after authorities say they were operating an illegal lottery out of four markets in San Pablo and Richmond, California.
Authorities say the lottery was broken up after a sting operation led by the California Lottery's Security and Law Enforcement Division.
Investigators say the seven suspects sold homemade tickets to buyers who were placing bets on numbers in an actual California Lottery game.

Indiana man says store cost him $11.5M lottery jackpot
A 70-year-old retired chemist is suing a convenience store chain for more than $11.5 million, claiming its employees cheated him out of a large jackpot by refusing to sell him a lottery ticket.
Charles Andrews says in his lawsuit that he picked the winning numbers for the February 2008 Hoosier Lotto drawing, but that a clerk at a Speedway store in Indianapolis refused to sell him a ticket with a few minutes left before the 10:40 p.m. official sales cutoff.

Lawmakers to mediate spat over Iowa Lottery security
Relations have become so strained between feuding directors of two state agencies that a couple of Iowa lawmakers have agreed to step in as mediators.
The standoff pits state ombudsman William Angrick against Iowa Lottery chief executive Terry Rich.
Angrick's staff, which investigates citizen complaints, has spent more than two years investigating the Iowa Lottery and has concluded that lottery players could be at risk of being cheated.

Cheated winner wants Texas Lottery to pay up
A man cheated of his million-dollar jackpot wants the Texas Lottery to pay up.
The case of Willis Willis drew widespread attention a week ago after a store clerk was indicted for allegedly keeping Willis' winning ticket and claiming the 67-year-old Grand Prairie man's prize in June.
The clerk, identified as Pankaj Joshi, is considered a fugitive.

National Lottery win turned couple into benefits cheats, says judge
Brian and Wendy Rushin had lived blameless lives until they won the money in 2002 and became misers .

Iowa Lottery retail check finds no cheating
The Iowa Lottery said today it found no evidence that lottery ticket winners were cheated when it conducted security checks last month at 120 retail sites statewide.
Three lottery underecover investigators posed as customers and visited 126 randomly-selected Iowa retail locations on Feb. 24 and 25, said Iowa Lottery Vice President Mary Neubauer. They presented 128 winning tickets with cash prizes ranging from $1 to $100.
