When you compare your lottery numbers to the draw results, what do you consider close?

I often read and hear of people talking about being close on their numbers because some of them were only one or two digits off from the draw numbers. For example, if a person selected the number 11, they might say they were close if the 9, 10, 12, or 13 were drawn. If they had several numbers like that, they would also consider them to be close. I don't exactly understand that reasoning. Are any of those numbers really any closer to the 11 than say the 38 or the 1? Does having several numbers like that make anyone closer to winning or matching more of the actual draw numbers?

The balls or computer digits just have numerical designations, don't they? And they don't know their own names, do they? It doesn't seem to me that they line up and hold hands or have any blood relation among themselves. They certainly don't appear to have any kinship as they're bouncing around in a draw machine. I just don't understand how being close in numerical designation makes a prediction or an actual play any closer to a win or the actual draw numbers.

On the other hand, if a person matches five out of six numbers or four out of five numbers, it seems to make sense to consider that being close to winning because x out of y numbers have actually been matched. In those cases, a person might well cash a ticket on a secondary prize for being close. This same thing could apply to games like P3 and P4 in matching front or back pairs, et cetera. By contrast, a person could be off by a digit or two on every number without actually matching any of the draw numbers or getting any money at all. Is that close?

Is there something here that I don't understand about the nature of numbers, their order, their designations, or the dynamic among them? It's my  hope that having some discussion and clarification on this might lead us all a little closer to picking and playing better numbers. Does anyone have a definitive or just a logical answer to what it means for numbers to be close? There are numerous good minds on this site in all the games. I'd greatly appreciate hearing from any of you on this question.

Thank you and good luck,

aye'

So close...and yet so far away? The old saying goes..."close only counts when playing the game of horseshoes" ...or could we possibly expand that to include "the lottery"? What is considered close and why does close matter in my lottery participation? For me, close isn't as much mathematical but rather motivational. I tend to think that saying "I was close" while being a few digits off of each number played counts for something because it reinforces that fact that a jackpot win really can happen (to anyone). For me, being close (even without matching a single number) just keeps enough pleasant lottery thoughts flowing to motivate me to stay in in the game. You gotta have a ticket...and who knows? Sometime when one least expects it, those numbers might not be close at all ...instead, your one unique ticket might be right on!

I determine whether or not i am close by the numbers I have right....

if the draw is 1 2 3 and i have 1 2 4 or 1 2 8 i consider that close

if i have 0 3 4 i dont consider that close

I believe life is about finding someone you cant live without

Close only counts in horseshoes anything else is an excuse people use when the miss by a number. It is open to many different interpretations, excuses for not getting it right. You might play 1234 and the number came out 1243 although you might have won a boxed play you were close to a pick 4 straight. But again it an excuse. One of the guys where I get my tickets got so tired of hearing me say that I almost won or I missed by one, or I woulda hit if only I had played a 2 instead of a 3 or i say i almost hit the number last night and he reminded me of the following see below.

He said

Big John says. You don't hit the number. The number hits you!!!!

I'm not Big John, I'm Four4me, Big John's a friend.

True, there is no kinship between the balls (heh), but I feel "close" is when I pick number 7, but number 6 or 8 is drawn. That is probably because of the way we mark the numbers in on the play card; the numbers being so "close" to each other consecutively.

Or "close" can be seen as picking 4 out of 5 drawn numbers.

Or when someone picks all the winning numbers, BUT does not play it LOL.

Or when someone picks all the winning numbers, BUT government officials already prosecuted the state's lottery organization and closed it down, before the winning ticket was claimed.

(heh just kidding on the last one)

BobP,

I've also read that one before. Thanks for putting up the link again.

So, may I take it that you're of the opinion that being close in either sense doesn't really amount to anything? I share some of that sentiment, but there are cases where being close can put quite a few bucks in your pocket. There are other cases where people are clearly under the Tony Sloane illusion.

Good luck,

Close is a way of managing your feelings, I use it a lot when I get two out of three or three or three out of four digits in exact order. Actually in some weird way, using the word close is comforting and makes me feel like I'm on the right track and should not give up and you can get a little juice off of that when your not winning. But if you don't win a cent, close only stands for one thing. Loser.

I added the odds for MegaMillions, and its looks like the odds are pretty good  for 10th place or getting close.  That's probably why getting close doesn't pay anything.

Now that's close...

May the warm winds of heaven blow softly upon your house. May  the Great Spirit bless all who enter there. May your mocassins make happy tracks in many snows. And may the rainbow always touch your shoulder.

Close is went you play the same line of numbers for several draws without any luck to see those numbers drawn after your ticket has expired.

I play to dream and dream of winning a major jackpot!
