Just because a legislator introduces a bill, it does not mean that it will automatically become law. In fact, only a fraction of the bills that get introduced ever make it to a vote, let alone get passed into law.
That is why it is critical to stay involved throughout the entire process - to make sure it stays in front of people's minds and that something underhanded does not take place which would kill it prematurely. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it because you can make a difference.
