New York is offering a buy $5 worth of Mega Millions tickets, get an additional $1 ticket for free. That increases the chances that the jackpot will be won in New York. I'm guessing the lottery thought so since they did give the green light for the promotion, and if the jackpot win is in New York, they get the state taxes on it. My question is if one state (participating in a multi-state game) offers a promotion on the game in which a free ticket is involved, should all states participating in the game offer the promotion as well? In other words, should a promotion involving free tickets for multi-state games be held by all participating states instead of just one?

I've redone my website.  Go to www.dr-ew.com.  I kept a lot of the old stuff, and I've added some new stuff.  Look for more new stuff in the coming weeks.

Yes, otherwise it creates an unfair advantage for new york. I can't believe other states are allowing this.

I agree with jsk2001. That is unreal! There is no difference here whether it be one ticket given away or ten, it still creates an unfair advantage for the state of New York. When does this go into effect?

Feb 27 - March 5. It doesn't seem unfair to me, as long as NY kicks the same amount in for the jackpot on the free tickets.  The odds haven't changed for me, what do I care where the tickets are sold? It will be interesting to see if there's a winner from NY this week.

Its up to the states to do whatever they want.  Michigan has had those type of promotions before also.  Those extra tickets might ad a couple thousand more tickets.  Doesn't really help the odds that a free ticket will win the jackpot.  The state will probably lose more money than it takes in on these promotions.

with a jackpot this size, there will be a lot more people buying tickets in multiples of 5 or 10, so quite a few free tickets will be given out. don't forget about people crossing the border from PA, CT, and since NY is the only Mega Millions State having the promotion, NJ and MA too.

Don't bother playing NY Lotto, with or without free tickets.

And now NY has a $5 ANNUITY-ONLY scratch game with MM quick-picks as prizes. DO NOT PLAY IT.

i think all other states players should boycot the multistate game until the promotion is over then the state offering the free ticket will be pressured by the state officals in the other states to end the unfair advantage created by such a offering
