I'm scheduling the first chat session for Lottery Post members, using the brand-new Chat feature that I am in the process of putting the finishing touches on.

As the first test, the chat session will run 2 hours - from 8:00 PM - 10:00 PM Eastern Time on Sunday night, March 6.

For anyone not aware of what Chat is, it is a real-time discussion box, just like AOL Instant Messenger, except everyone in the chat room can see and participate in the discussion.

For those who want to take a discussion "offline" you can open private message chats with other member(s).

Chat is based on Macromedia Flash - which is installed on almost every Internet browser made.  (If you don't have Flash already, it is easy and quick to install - no big deal.)

After the chat session is over, I will post a log of the entire discussion for future reference and discussion.

Going forward, I will continue to schedule Chat sessions on Sunday evenings.  I programmed the Chat server to automatically turn on at 8:00 PM, and turn off at 10:00 PM every Sunday night.  I don't ever envision having the Chat server turned on all the time, as it is not intended to replace the forums, but I think it will make a great supplement to the forums.

For now, up to 50 people can participate online at one time.  If it turns out that there is a high demand for usage, I can increase this limit in the future.

Only registered (and activated) Lottery Post members can participate, so if you haven't registered as a Lottery Post member yet, now's the time.  A really nice feature is that I automated the sign-on process, so if you're logged into Lottery Post, you will be automatically logged into the Chat window as well.

This should be interesting!

People have been requesting Chat for a long time.  The manufacturer of the chat server told me that they are working on enabling video capability in the future, so if this turns out to be popular we can do all kinds of cool things.  Also, the server can handle guest speaker chats, where questions can go to the speaker one at a time.  All this really depends on what kind of consistent participation we have.  I hope everyone gives it a try, because it's really nice software.

woohoo...this should prove to be interesting from both an entertainment aspect as well as informational aspect. Personally, I think it will be great in that perhaps over due time, several rooms could be established that would be subject oriented to assist in Excel or other programming related issues. Several years ago, I participated in something of simliar nature with AOL and really enjoyed it. I look forward to simliar success here.

Last time I claimed to know what I was doing, a crowd was quick to point out how wrong I was.

Because of security reasons I de-activated my Macromedia Flash, but I will see if I can reactivate it in time for the Sunday chat.

It should be interesting, how will we use it and where on the forum will it be, I have never used anything like that, I only come here to the Lottery Post forum so far.

I am at a loss as to how I can use it or get into it.

              Lantern,

Can you tell me what security issues you had with Flash?  I am not aware of any security concerns with that software, and I have used it for years.  (If you use firewall software -- which everyone should -- that should minimize any perceived security holes.)  I don't doubt that you had issues, I am just very curious about it.

As far as using the Chat feature, don't worry, I guarantee when you open the chat window you will understand within one or two minutes everything there is to do.  It is extremely user-friendly.  Besides, when do I ever create something that is difficult to use?

I never had any problems with flash myself, I just got the feeling that it might be safer not using it, but I will have it, for Sunday.

Oh, OK, don't worry about Flash - it is very safe, and should always be enabled.  About 90% of Internet browsers have Flash enabled.  (That's a real statistic.)

Oh my gosh, that's a lot of software installed.  I don't think you need that much  - it's probably slowing down your computer.

                              A little.

The first thing I do is completely uninstall Internet Explorer and cut it out from Win98SE, then I reinstall it as a separate program.

Then I update Direct X and Java and other things, I also customize Win98SE and Internet Explorer.
