Next biggest jumps were by powerball in 2002 including the one won by Jack.

My records show that the jump in jackpot was from $230 million to $363 million for the May 9, 2000 draw. A jump of $133 million.

        Good luck,
        Jake

You would need sales of around $200,000,000 for a jackpot jump of $150,000,000.  Highly unlikely that would ever happen.

It almost happened once, so it could happen.

The lotteries sold $195,576,985 worth of tickets for the May 9, 2000 Big Game drawing of $363 million (source: http://www.lottoreport.com/mmsales1.htm ).

I'm sorry but the jackpot will take some time to get there.  Powerball has a cap; once the jackpot has reached the largest value it has seen, the top prize can only rise by $25 million, with the rest of the proceeds distributed to the second prize winners.

I'm not sure, but I believe this is using annuity value and not cash value to determine where this limitation kicks in.  Since the annuity has been inflated by a new payout scheme, the real value of the prize, it's cash value, will rise even more slowly.

I suspect the annuity value will not get much beyond $350.  That's a pretty healthy prize in itself though.

I could see a big jump happening, but I don't necessarily think it would jump by 150 million though.

I think it depends on the Jackpot level. So far sales vs. population in MM isn't that great. If a jackpot passes the 300 million mark or rolls at the 290 mark to 350+ then sales could really take off. The big push would be from people who normally don't buy tickets but will thanks to media coverage.

Anyone understand what the true 25M jump that is allowed on Powerball? Does it mean the annuity can only go to 265M after tonight or the cash can only go up to 142.7M if no one wins tonight?????

The cap isn't in effect yet for Powerball because the annuity jackpot currently has to be at $339.9 million or above for the cap to be in effect (the record PB annuity jackpot of $314.9 million + $25 million).

It HAS happened and can happen again. On August 25th, 2001 Powerball sold $203,868,890 worth of lottery tickets  (http://www.lottoreport.com/powerballsales.htm).

A 150 million jump is more likely in the game Mega millions because they don't had a match 5 bonus rule like powerball does to cap the growth of jackpots.  A roll of 150 million in powerball benefits the match 5 bonus winners more than anyone else.
