How come Powerball only went up 12 million ?? At 100 plus you would think larger increase.

I think $23.6 million tix were sold for this draw.  Last draw only $19 million.  (It's a powerball thing lol)

How are you going to win if you don't play?

Actually it was more like only 21.4 million tickets.  Powerball's press release figures include PowerPlay sales as well.

The last time Powerball went up $20 million, it was overestimated.  With both Powerball and Mega Millions increasing their number of combinations, jackpot fatigue has set in, and it now takes jackpots higher than $100 million to get everyone buying a ticket.

$12 million is not exactly chump change. Heck I would even be very happy and content with that amount as a jackpot win. I would expect to see the roll overs rise, if there are more, as the jackpot climbs higher. Then we can have another one of those pathetic "first time ever players" win again.

fxsterling-you bring up an interesting concept to create more winners. Since its statistically known that small wins go unclaimed , then by years end that would end up to some wonderfull 2nd chance drawings! The vestage from that money accuring interest through the year surely would make a lucratic jackpot!

Some folks might snicker at winnings of 50 k or 100 k for 2nd chance drawings but by golly as I learned in accounting I'd rather be out of the red then in it!

Granted most states have a dump fund that when winning tickets are unclaimed, instant prizes unclaimed ,the funds automatically go back into the states revenue for state run programs....

Sorry to have gone offtopic ...but its still about the lottery! :)

Someone won from Iowa tonight.  It resets to $15 million.

I wonder how many weeks/months it will go unclaimed while the person continues to run their successful business...

DAMMIT!! It was hit in Iowa and it wasn't mine!!  I matched only the first number (8), but that was it!!

That's the fourteenth time this year the Powerball jackpot was awarded.  That's a new record for Powerball, breaking its old record of twelve.

Oh yeah, I think Powerball does take money out of its jackpot to fund the set cash prize reserve.  While the MUSL reported that the annuitized prize was $113.2 million, based on sales for this run, according to http://www.lottoreport.com/powerballsales.htm , the cash value of the jackpot should be $56,419,432, which amounts to an annuity value of approximately $115.9 million.  The cash value of the jackpot according to MUSL is approximately $55.1 million, which means the states kept the other $1.3 million, most likely to fund the set prize reserve.
