Why even play if your not going to check your ticket? I know that odds are against u but at least check your tickets. 2 tickets, worth 850 k might go unclaimed pisses me off. That is alot of money for anyone, don't see how people can be so careless.

from powerball site:

     $853,492 Powerball Tickets to Expire!
Two Powerball tickets worth an incredible $853,492 each       will expire soon if the winners do not step forward. One ticket was purchased on October 19, 2005 at       Hebron BP, 2144 Kilgore Place, Hebron, Kentucky. The other missing ticket was purchased in Littleton, Colorado.        Both tickets were purchased for the October 19, 2005 Powerball drawing worth $340 million. The winners of the       missing tickets matched the first five white ball numbers to win Powerball’s second tier prize of $200,000. The       tickets also shared in the Match 5 Bonus prize pool, winning an additional $653,492 each for the total prize of       $853,492! The winning numbers for the October 19, 2005 Powerball drawing were: 7-21-43-44-49 PB 29. The last       date to claim the tickets is April 17. Holders of the winning tickets should contact either the Kentucky Lottery       headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky, or the Colorado Lottery headquarters in Pueblo, Colorado.

      I Agree!

I've ranted about this in a few posts and there have been other comments about careless people who don't claim their prizes. In March at least 3 Fantasy 5 tickets expired in FL.  I don't care if it's "only" $53K or $87K like the ones that expired a few days ago. 2 expired on March 30 in a town called Bushnell that I never heard of, so I wonder if they were purchased by the same person. Out of curiosity I got on the FL site at around 11pm that night to see if someone had woken up at the last minute! Once a $22 million jackpot went unclaimed.  I know this is not uncommon due to many reasons, a few of them being that these people must lose their tickets, forget about them or (I'm not joking) die before they claim them. This might sound weird to people, but I was thinking of the latter reason the other day when I bought my Lotto ticket and decided that, if I ever win a jackpot, I should really tell someone in my family. Everyone always says "Keep quiet and don't tell your family" but if something happened to me before I could get to Tallahassee, I'd want my sister to know she has a huge inheritance sitting in a safe deposit box or wherever I'd hide it. I'm not sure I'd want to put that kind of trust in a lawyer I just met. Even with a signed ticket in my name or the name of a trust, I'm sure a smart attorney could figure out a way to claim it for himself without anyone being the wiser. No offense to any attorneys on this board, but people have killed for a lot less.

i just don't get it. if u die of shock i understand but if u alive breathing ain't no reason u shouldn't claim ur ticket. there are so many places to check if your a winner.  if u don't care if u won don't play, simple.

I've read that the total in the United States is in the "BILLIONS" but I doubt if that's just for one year.  I've seen huge jackpots go unclaimed. It's unusual, but about 3 years ago we had a $30M jackpot here that expired. Usually the money gets put back into the pot, but Jeb suggested it go to a college fund.

I was thinking that figure doesn't include the scratch tickets, at least until the games have ended. If someone buys an instant game ticket and doesn't claim it, how would anyone know? At least the online games are announced on tv and posted at the stores and on web sites looking for the winners.

Well, you can't really account for Scratch tickets.  the only way they are going to find out if soembody has the winner is if the winner comes forward..  There are alot of winning tickets unscratched

On the Michigan site, on the front page, they have a "unclaimed winnings" link.

I don't know what you mean. What would the lottery have to gain by making a false statement saying a winning ticket is going to expire? When a ticket is generated online, where and when is always documented. Many times there are 3 winners for Fantasy 5 here, for example, and 1 person who won $50 or $75K doesn't claim his share. Most of the time the store where the ticket was purchased will post signs and the web sites always have a link to tickets that will soon expire showing where they were purchased.

i can't believe people actually let these things expire.my thought is that they throw em out and never check them.
