  If I win any jackpot game, my vote is to claim within a year. After they claim a ticket, they have up to 60 days to approve a cash option like MM, PB, and CA SLP.

  One year is plenty of time for the absent minded lottery ticket stashers....

  Personally, I would have mine within the first week, after consulting with advisers...

  It would be a shame to be carrying it around in a shirt pocket for months and then forget to take it out of the pocket when you decided to wash the shirt.

  A lotto ticket is treated as a bearer bond.  The holder is the legal claimant.  As the lotto people think the holder is the winner, then the holder should be the one to determine how long before he/she/it cashes in.

  Personally, I think a year is plenty of time unless you're in a coma.  Florida only gives people 6 months and I don't like the rule stating the winner must claim the prize within 60 days of the drawing or forfeit the cash option. He/she should have at least 60 days after the claim to make that choice. I would probably only take the cash, but 60 days can go by very quickly.

  Anyway, in theory I think Gasmeterguy is right.  After all, it's not as if there is a bag of money waiting for you at the lottery office. Has there ever been a case where a jackpot winner came forward after the expiration date? I don't recall reading such a story.
