  I haven't been to Vegas in over 20 years!  I stayed at the Dunes in 1976 and the MGM Grand in 1978 or 79.  (estimated dates)   My last stay was at the Tropicana in the early 80s. 

  I really enjoyed Vegas back then, but I was in my 20s.  The first time my ex and I made a deal not to go to bed (well, to sleep that is!) for the 4 days.  Of course we passed out eventually!  I liked downtown the best and we gambled at the Golden Nugget once until dawn.  We also enjoyed all the free food and those 50 cent shrimp tails (was that 50 ct or a buck?)

  Once on this board I described our first trip.  The man I was married to had hired someone who was was "connected" in some way.  To show his gratitude he gave us a card and told us to ask for Mr. XXXX  (a long Italian name)  We got "comped" at a nice restaurant, served fine wine and were treated like royalty.   The same thing happened at a show.  We were standing in back of a long line and suddenly someone escorted us to a very nice table.  Back then it seemed exciting, but looking back, I wonder who the heck Mr. Abundanza (not real name) was, but maybe I've seen too many movies!

  Guess this didn't answer your question about Vegas, since it's probably nothing like that now. One thing that probably hasn't changed in the weather.  If you go in July, expect to be roasted just waiting for a taxi.  I don't care when someone says "but they don't have the humidity."  110 is still very, very hot!!

  You're right,JustX,you probably wouldn't recognize it anymore with the way it's grown. It seems they are building a new casino there every week,judging from my Casino Player magazine! Just a few years ago a cousin of mine was going to move there because housing was pretty reasonable but not anymore! It's a "hot" spot in more ways then one!

  When I signed on this morning, I saw the poll and posted.  I didn't realize this was an old thread.  I should be more careful and read all of the comments before I write anything.

  What hasn't changed?  If you asked me the same thing about Aruba, I could tell you about my trips to that island in 1975 (honeymoon) in 1978 and then in 1992.   In 1975 there weren't many American tourists.  Last time I went in 1992, there were fast food joints in Oranjastaad.  Across from where I was staying was a small shopping center with a New York style deli.  On the wall was a photo of a Nashua, NH Bowling League.  I lived in Nashua, NH at the time!  Sort of spoils the whole exotic trip feeling.  I hope Puerto Rico still requires that gentlemen wear jackets in the casinos and the ladies dress appropriately.  I don't like to hear "Well, the Americans bring in all the money so we need to dress down" or "we're on vacation, so I don't feel like bathing and putting on a nice dress."  Sorry, but if a person can afford to go on vacation (and gamble) he/she can afford to buy one nice outfit to keep the class in the casinos.  I bought a long, lace dress for my trip in 1992 and didn't wear it.  Most of the other tourists were wearing shorts and sandals. (here they walk around half naked)  Fortunately I was able to wear the gown at a wedding the next summer!

  OMG!  I did it again - got way off topic.  I shouldn't get started.  As poor as I am these days, I still don't want to look like a slob when I go out, even to the market.
