Just curious to discover why people play the JackPot Games?

The odds for Mega (taken from this website) are:

What are the odds of winning?

There are nine ways to win prizes:

MatchPrizeOdds
5 + 1Jackpot     1 in 175,711,536
5 + 0$250,0001 in 3,904,701
4 + 1$10,0001 in 689,065
4 + 0$1501 in 15,313
3 + 1$1501 in 13,781
2 + 1$101 in 844
3 + 0$71 in 306
1 + 1$31 in 141
0 + 1$21 in 75
Overall odds of winning1 in 39.89

Read one way (and feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

Buying one ticket line in Mega Millions will lose around 60% of the time.....

So your one line will only net you any type of win about 40% of the time and the majority

of those wins will be $150 or less...

So the question to the group is why do you play?

============================================

I play on a regular bases, because even though the odds are against me --

I like to believe in the "what if" or "why not" scenario....

as in what if I hit  my favorite numbers or

five numbers are going to be drawn with the mega ball  --- why not mine matching....

Any discussion?

      You quoted it yourself

"Overall odds of winning 1 in 39.89"

      1 in 39.89 is not 40%.  Divide 1 by 39.89.  It is about 2.5%.

If that was how it worked the lottery would be out of business in a hurry. The overall odds of winning (anything) are about 1 in 40 which is 2.5% of the time. 97.5% of the time you won't even get your dollar back.
