He has just retired and will now give away billion of dollars, but what would be the best projects for him to donate his money to?

In my opinion, the optimal use of this kind of money is to provide money
in such a way it comes back to you and can be used again.  This way the
cash flow does the good work.  Usually this means providing seed money
loans for the poor to start a small business or to guarantee loans so
people can learn a trade, so poor people can buy their apartment building and turn it into a co-op or so mobile home owners can buy their park before the developers bulldoze it out from under them.  BobP

He should donate some of it to me so I can buy a state of the art computer from his company. And lottery tickets,I'd buy lots of lottery tickets!

Bill Gates has always given away hundreds of millions to charity.  I doubt if he will ever officially retire, since he is the 3rd richest man in the world and made it by being a savvy entrepreneur & tycoon.

So what does this have to do with the lottery?  Do you think he should give it to lottery players?  Develop lottery software?  Sell wheels?

I'm glad somebody pointed out Gates already having given away hundreds of millions.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

Bill is retiring from Microsoft to work with his foundations. A far nobler quest.

The guy is clearly a giver, he is not responsible for the shortcomings of others. There are sooo many Human Needs worldwide, no one person can address them all. Any time, Any where, Any how, someone stands up and Trys to better his fellow man, he deserves praise.  What if everyone contributed in their own small way what he contributes, what a world this would be. Think about a world where"charity to all" is the mantra! Rather than the taking of the land of others,The massive distortions of "REAL HUMAN HISTORY", The incredible CRUELTY of man against his fellow man! THINK ABOUT THAT!!!   Perhaps were moving into a time wherein  these issues will be addressed!!!!!!!

Oh Yeah, were talking about the lottery. OK 246p3 Cali. it's ok,  i'm used to losing!

Mr. Gates is doing just fine, Thank You.Rant

This is an amusing question IMHO.   After all, it's his money.  He is not obligated to do anything with it.  If he spent it all on Nut Fudgie Bars that is his business.  Nowhere does it say that anyone that earns something is required to share it.   That is their personal choice.  Most of the time people that share what they have made are looking to "feel good" about themselves.   I think that's because they feel guilty that they have earned it, and don't feel they deserve it. But they do deserve it, and shouldn't feel guilty about it.
