Why? I don't get this, The Mega was 85 Million and EST for the next lottery will be 103 million a jump of 18 Million and Played in only 12 States. Now for the powerball, The Powerball was 92 million and the EST will be 105 million a jump of only 13 million. The Powerball is played in 30 States, Washington D.C. and the US Virgin Islands. Just same Like the Powerball should go up a lot more, Guess I have to look at the total population.

Mega  85 million to 103 million

Powerball 92 million to 105 million

In Addition to Ticket Sales, you also need to consider the Payouts for the Last Drawing:

    MegaMillions

I think it has to do with the type of investments each lottery puts their money into between draws. I guess MM has a better return on their investment than PB. PB actually has a FAQ page  on their website where they answer this question. Their whole FAQ page s a pretty entertainng read, yet informative.

The number of states is meaningless, other than each new state that joins increases the potential player population. The MM states tend to be ones with large populations, so as was pointed out, MM has nearly 30% more potential players. I can't imagine what effect payouts for the previous drawing would have, though they certainly offer some indication of how many tickets were bought, and that's what it all comes down to. For the previous drawings, the advertised jackpot increased by 13 million and then by only 12 million, but sales for that drawing increased by about 20% . That suggests that  the advertised jackpot should have increased by about  16.5 million instead of 12 million. In that case, 4.5 million of the current increase of 18 million is from sales for the previous drawing, so the real increase is about 14.5 million.

I still don't believe Mega takes in more money then the powerball also I believe powerball has a MUCH bigger population base. I wish their was a unbais firm that could post the truth of how much money each really takes in on every Drawing.

                    Lottery Sales for latest drawings:

                    Powerball: $26,121,650

                    Mega Millions: $29,195,735

I believe this is relevant.  Powerball probably should be higher.

I believe you also have to take into account the amount of expenses it takes to run PB out of 32 states vs. MB out of 12...almost 3X's more.
