Why would you feel you should tell people you don't know anything about your personal wealth simply because they asked?  If they didn't already know that it was none of their business then I would tell them it was none of the business.

    I Agree!

If I win something like a  couple of million, I won't live the high life. So they won't ask.

If I win many millions I'm going to live miles from anybody, so there won't be neighbors  to ask....

isnt it rude to ask how you made your money " in  polite socoety ? "

No. It's rude to ask how much money you make, not how you make your money. If you're going to interact with people, you should expect that questions about what you do for a living will be a part of normal conversation. Give people an answer that leaves them with the wrong questions, and you can expect them to spend time wondering.

The better question here is, if you don't want people to know how much you have or how you got it, why you would have to explain "your huge amount of money" in the first place. That suggests that you're planning on making an ostentatious spectacle for the world to see. If you're going to make it obvious that you've got a great deal of money, or that you're different than the other people around you, then you should expect problems to follow you around. If you've got the sense to live reasonably and not make a spectacle of yourself, then there's no reason that people would be asking awkward questions on a regular basis.

You tell them - "If I excuse you for asking will you excuse me for not answering."

Let's say you won a huge jackpot and moved somewhere were no one knew you. What story would you tell to people if they asked how you about your income? Would you tell them you won the lottery or come up with something else.

I think I would just tell people I am living off a trust fund my grand parents left me.

After introductions at a gathering it isn't unusual to be asked what you do.

Even at twenty, you can always say you're retired.

When I was a kid a "friend" asked how come I always had pocket money.  I told him I had a paper route.  A couple days later I came across him trying to sell one of my customers on the other paper.

Since when was it an insult to be asked what you do for a living? I think you guys are getting it confused with asking how much someone makes.

how much i have is no one's business.

what i do for a living is a natural question.

my answer for that is i have a hobby that produces items which can sometimes sell for lots of money so i would tell them that i do my hobby for a "living". there are any number of hobbies out there that you could use this same statement.

I would never disclose how much I was worth and to do so would be in bad taste.  If asked what I did for a living I'd say I was a private investor.  And I wouldn't be lying either.  I already invest in stocks, bonds, and real-estate so if I won I would just do it on a much larger scale.  Buying a lottery ticket is simply an investment that usually never pays off, but some people get lucky.

I wouldn't say I got it from investing or stocks, because then people will ask what company you bought stock from.

I guess you could always lie and say you invested in Netscape when it went public then sold it a while later before it tanked.

But I'm a horrible liar. I would have to say something that's closer to the truth so I can keep a straight face.

Most of my friends and family know I already invest in the stock market.  They just don't know how much I've made or how much I have.  And some of them have come to me for investment advice.

I've already got that question from people.  I'm not lying when I say I've invested in Apple, Google and various other companies.
